This feature-rich application prompts you to take breaks and offers useful tools to help you avoid repetitive strain injuries, but it will cost you some disk space. After questions about your computer habits, RSI-Shield quickly creates a break schedule for you. The intuitive interface presents several icons that include options to view schedule settings, usage graphs, and macros. The program is preset to disable your mouse and keyboard during breaks, but you can change these options and adjust break intervals and duration. RSI-Shield does more than simply prompt you to take a break. It offers exercises to help reduce upper body and eye strain with step-by-step instructions and an animated demonstration. RSI-Shield also has tools to create macros and use the keyboard in lieu of the mouse. Though some may be put off by the hefty 16MB of memory it requires, this comprehensive app can help any user avoid RSI and it offers a generous 60-day trial.

"Never got to use it - install/update problem"

by slheider on May 16, 2007

Pros: don't know; never got to use it.

Cons: When I first opened this program to use it, it said there was an update which I ok'd to download. I was then put into a never ending loop; had to take down the computer hard to stop and regain control of my computer. Since this was only a 30 day free trial (versus a freeware program) and I had the looping problem, I opted to uninstall this and use the Scirocco Take a Break 2.7 (available here on CNet.com) which I like.

    "Great health product"

by wisedriver on June 25, 2006

Pros: I've spent 30 to 40 years sitting on my can at a typewriter then a PC. My body/spine/musculature system is wrecked. I've been doing physical rehab exercises and found this. Been using it two days. At first I resented its intrusion into my valuable PC time but now I like it a lot. The time breaks (default) feel about right and movies pop up leading me through different stretches. I had another timer but it felt punishing, depriving. I value RSI because of the 'companionship' of the little movie and for helping me to remember that what's important is not knocking my work out for hour and hours but my physical well being. It comes with about 15 exercises and the speed can be controlled. This is a really nice program and I haven't yet explored the macro possibilites.

Cons: CNET says its a 60 day trial; the RSI download says 30 days. The settings controls seem a bit daunting, probably because I always feel busy.
