RAR Expander for Mac is a utility to create and uncompress files in RAR archives. Supposedly fully compatible with WinRAR, RAR Expander for Mac is a clean, simple app that installs in a few seconds and works flawlessly in the testing we did. Notably, RAR Expander for Mac also supports AppleScript, so you can create shell utilities to handle packing and unpacking RAR files in a larger environment.

RAR Expander for Mac works with both single and multi-part RAR archives. It also supports password-protected RAR files. To use RAR Expander for Mac you can either open the app and provide the path to the RAR file or source files, or you can drag and drop the RAR file (or source files) on the app icon. Either way, RAR Expander for Mac worked quickly, and didn't hiccup once on the dozens of files we imported from WinRAR. Moving files created by RAR Expander for Mac to Windows also created no bad behavior when opening those files with WinRAR. The archiving and expanding happens fast on the Mac, and you can set preferences for default directories and audible signals when the app finishes its task.

RAR Expander for Mac is one of those simple apps we take for granted once we have them, but wish we had when we don't have them. It worked easily, quickly, and silently. If you ever have to work with RAR files, RAR Expander for Mac is a winner of an app.

    "CNET installers contains bloatware!"

    July 13, 2014   |   By toatsmagoats79

    Version: RAR Expander 0.8.5b4

    Pros

To be fair to RAR Expander, I didn't get to review the program. When I noticed that bloatware was going to be installed on my Mac, I quit the install process.

    Cons

This Download.com installer contains bloatware/spyware from Spigot, as well as hijacking your browser with extensions that will reset your firefox and chrome homepages as well as redirect you to custom search pages. You can disable this at install (scroll down to bottom of terms of use), by checking "advanced user" install. You'll still have to manually disable all the bloatware one at a time by unchecking each one.

    Summary

Use the Download.com / CNET installer at your own risk. I won't be downloading anything here anymore. Shame on you Download.com and Spigot.

    "Ok, but ...see has problems"

    March 17, 2013   |   By nightshadow2013

    Version: RAR Expander 0.8.5b4

    Pros

It functions OK but each time it does not expand and combine rar part automatically. I have to go to the DL files and choose the files to combine and start with file (rar part 1) or it gives an error message.

    Cons

For some reason each time it expands a file, it also adds a copy of Lightroom 4.3 installer package on my computer. I don't know why and how to stop it. I then have to eject the LR package. Last night I dl a program with 6 rar parts and I then had 6 Lightroom 4.3 packages on my computer that I had to eject.

    Summary

I think this program has potential, but needs to solve these problems. It drives me crazy that it ALWAYS adds the Lightroom 4 installer package with each rar.

    Updated on Mar 17, 2013

It seems that the Lightroom 4 installer package only opens when the rar expander has rar parts to expand and combine. I still don't know why and there is no link that I can find to make that happen.

    Updated on Apr 12, 2013

The LR installer problem stopped when the new LR update was released. I now give the program 4 1/2 stars only because it doesn't combine the expanded RAR's automatically.
