Computers can make writing and playing music vastly easier, but software doesn't always hit the right note. QuickScore Elite is designed to help songwriters and composers put their creations on paper, using mouse clicks and keystrokes to create musical scores. Like other programs of its kind, it can be a fast way to develop musical ideas and hear the computer play them back for you--but this one isn't intuitive enough to make us want to give up a pen and paper. Several sample compositions and templates help a new user get started, but once inside a piece of music, it gets tricky. Note duration is set from the number pad, but the plus and minus buttons don't change a note's length. Notes are placed on the paper with a right-click, but a left-click is needed to navigate to a different place, no matter how far away you've moved the mouse cursor. Inserting notes in the middle of a bar in a complete piece automatically adds rests, even if a note was desired. The resulting frustration kept us from being able to recommend this software wholeheartedly.
