This flexible configuration tool helps experienced users manage system access at both the file and program levels. Public PC Desktop's well-organized interface features side menu options for configuring the passwords and master user information. Most options are simply set with radio buttons or check boxes. Informative tooltip pop-ups are useful, but you'll still need the Help file for critical program setup configuration. While instruction is detailed, three prominent warning messages may deter inexperienced users from attempting this program.
Public PC Desktop is designed to limit or prevent access to various system areas and block select Web sites. The master user easily sets system configuration to disable functions, prevent users from installing programs, and select the approved sites for browsing. We especially liked the Web site access function's flexibility to allow or restrict access to specific URLs. It's as easy to restrict computer access time per user.
The demo has a periodic nag screen, but there are no other trial restrictions. Public PC Desktop is a full-featured computer access manager that will appeal to lab managers and public PC administrators.
Publisher's description
From Ixis :Use Public PC Desktop to turn your personal computer into an Internet kiosk or a public access workstation. It can be setup to completely disable access to files installed on your PC while giving full access to all necessary applications you specify. This way, you create a workstation that can be easily used in any public place, where many people have free access to it, but none of them can damage (whether accidentally or intentionally) vital system's files or clutter your hard disk with garbage.
You can selectively enable access to any programs installed on your PC so that not only the Web browser, but also any other software you specify, can be run and used. Public PC Desktop is a complete solution and is ideal for public libraries, Internet cafes, information terminals, and in-store kiosks. It is also good for limiting activities of your children on your home PC. Version 6.1 includes unspecified updates.
