Hard-core IM users have high standards when it comes to choosing a multiservice client. Alien Technology Proteus, with support for Yahoo, MSN, AOL, and ICQ, among others, is so packed with tasty features you might never want to use another IM client.
Revolutionary interface functionality separates this multiservice IM client from the pack. For example, multiple conversations are tucked into a single window, with new chats spawning to a drawer. Proteus takes full advantage of OS X's built-in UI features for maximum customizability, allowing transparency, themes, sounds, and menu-bar extras. In addition to connecting to the big-guy services, the utility supports Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, iChat, Rendezvous, and Yahoo Japan. Features such as typing notification, absent from previous versions, now are included. Unfortunately, file transferring for AOL is still MIA.
Although Proteus looks and functions like a pro, its stability is less than stellar. Third-party clients may never be on a level playing field feature-wise, with the officially sponsored chat programs. However, superior usability and an outstanding interface are reason enough to download Proteus.

Version: Proteus 4.14 beta
"Decent but slow connect and MNS troubles"
Pros: Nice configurable interface.
Cons: I tends to take a long time to connect to all the accounts, and most of the time it didn't connect to msn. When it did connect to msn it tended to only last a couple minuets.
