We have to admit we were skeptical. We've messed around in Photoshop before and had no idea what we were doing. Portrait Professional promised to be easy, but how easy could it be? Surely it would require some kind of photo-editing skills, right? Wrong.

We are not exaggerating when we say that anyone could use this program. It doesn't really get any easier than this. Open a photo, and the program guides you though the process of adjusting a series of outlines over the subject's facial features. Even this doesn't have to be exact. Once you've done this, the program works its magic, and you're done. For users who want to do a little more fine-tuning, there are separate controls for adjusting facial dimensions and skin characteristics. The main drawback to this program is that users run the risk of making photos look a little too good, which is to say, unrealistic. Portrait subjects will end up with magazine-perfect complexions, which may not be what you're going for. Users will also need to be careful about adjusting things like mouth shape and jaw line; the results may be more attractive than the original, but may end up looking nothing like the subject. Still, this program provides an incredibly easy and efficient way to edit portraits, and overall we were quite impressed with the results. The built-in Help guide is not particularly detailed, but it's adequate.

Portrait Professional is free to try, but the trial version leaves a watermark on images. The program installs desktop icons without asking but uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program to all users.

"Very easy to use. The program does all the work."

December 17, 2009  |  By jstevensphoto

 |  Version: Portrait Professional 9.0.7

Pros

Very simple, intuitive and produces a quality image.

Cons

I wish it was a plug-in for Aperture. As is, I have to get images off my desktop, run them and then try to put them back into Aperture. Not sure if this is true for Photoshop.

Summary

If you're looking for a cheap, easy-to-use and quality product, this is it. I saw it advertised in two photo magazines and figured for $70, it was worth a shot. It takes a little practice to master the program, but the good news is the on-line support is excellent. Each support module has videos which take you step-by-step through the editing process. I have never used Photoshop because I prefer programs that are simple to use and inexpensive. If you're in need of a fast, easy touch-up program, I strongly recommend PP 9.

Pros

I was using v6 for some time and now v 9 is even better. I use the Studio version for maximum benefit.
Excellent results quickly and easily

Cons

None so far.

Summary

Just about the only software I've tried that impressed me from the start.
For a very little effort you get spectacular results.
Worth every cent. Particularly if you're a pro like me.

"I was a sceptic. Now I am a believer!"

 |  Version: Portrait Professional 9.0.7

Pros

To my amazement, the product does what it says it does. And more!

Cons

None so far.

Summary

I can't praise this software enough. I could go on and on about how awesome it is and how much time it has saved me and how much better my retouched photos look. If you are even slightly considering this software, don't hesitate any longer. Download the trial and be ready with your credit card to purchase the full version. Worth every penny and a whole lot more!

"Fast, gorgeous, professional results w/lightning speed."

 |  Version: Portrait Professional 9.0.7

Pros

I've used PP since many versions ago and recently upgraded to Studio 9. The enhancements and improvements, to an already-terrific product, are just spectacular, especially the ability to work on profile shots now.

Cons

So far I can't find a thing I don't like.

Summary

This company (Anthropics) puts its heart and soul into its products. And their support is second to none. As a photographer, I use many different apps and plug-ins for my post-processing work, depending on what I want to achieve, and PP Studio 9 is the only one I'll use for my portrait work, with few exceptions. I love that I can use it as a plug-in now, too. Their new ClearSkin technology is wonderful. My clients think I'm a miracle-worker when they see their proofs! Even the most subtle changes have huge, flattering effects. As long as the end-user doesn't overdo the adjustments, keeping faces looking "real", this is a must-have for any portrait and photographer, and for everyone else who wants to improve the looks of their portrait images, whether candid or formal. Nice job, Anthropics! You have a fan for life.

Pros

1. Easy interface

Cons

I have done about 10 photos so far and no real complaints yet.

Summary

Well worth the purchase. Much easier than photoshop and much better results unless one is a real pro.

"Easy adjustments with professional looking results."

June 09, 2009  |  By thomg

 |  Version: Portrait Professional 9.0.7

Pros

Ease of use. No learning curve. Ability to 'tweak' images after default changes applied.

Cons

For this price, nothing, so far.

Summary

I shoot a lot of teenagers for school portraits and there are usually a fair amount of skin blemishes to clean up; the auto skin smoothing in this software really saves a lot of time.
