Publisher's Description
From Sci-Fi Hi-Fi:
PodWorks is a Mac OS X (Cocoa) application that compensates for the iPod's only downside: Apple only allows you to copy songs to your iPod. If you have two Macs and want to use your iPod to transfer music between them, or you only store your MP3s on your iPod and need to copy them back onto your hard drive after a disk failure, you are out of luck!
This is where PodWorks comes in: it allows you to copy songs from any Mac iPod to any Mac running OS X (10.2). Its important features include:
- Superior performance: Many other standalone iPod song transfer utilities work by reading ID3 data out of every song on the iPod--a slow process. PodWorks, by contrast, is capable of reading directly from the iPod's internal database, resulting in nearly instantaneous display of all metadata.
- More metadata: Since PodWorks can read from the iPod's internal database, it can also display and sort by song "metadata" not available through ID3 (including "Date Added" and "Play Count").
- iTunes integration: In addition to copying songs to the Finder, PodWorks can send songs, playlists (registered version only), and metadata (star ratings, play counts, track numbers, etc.) directly to iTunes. It can also filter its song list to show you only the songs on the iPod that are not present in your iTunes library.
- iTunes-like sorting and searching: PodWorks is designed so that its data columns sort intelligently, the same way they do in iTunes. For example, the "Artist" column sorts first by artist, then by album, then by disc number, then by track number. Additionally, it features an iTunes-style "type-ahead" search to enable quick access to specific songs.
- Playlists: PodWorks recognizes your iPod's playlists. Entire playlists can be copied to your computer with a single drag (registered version only).
- On-The-Go Playlist Support: Very handy for people who don't want to use the automatic syncing in iTunes but still want to save their On-The-Go playlists.
- Song Playback: PodWorks allows you to preview songs before you copy them by playing them directly off the iPod.
- Strong organizational capabilities: Copying large numbers of files can get messy, so PodWorks can sort MP3 files into directories and change their filenames according to your preferences.
- Portability: PodWorks can be placed on your iPod for convenient access away from your home computer. It will work when run off the iPod, and will remember its registration information even when connected to a previously unknown machine.
What's new in this version: Fixed minor path bug that sometimes caused direct-to-iTunes transfers to fail.

"Works Perfectly"
Version: PodWorks 2.9.6
Pros
So easy to use and so consistent. You can easily tell it to copy all files from your ipod to a computer avoiding duplicates and it works pretty much perfectly. I'm sure it makes a mistake here and there but I've never seen it in about 3 years.
Cons
It costs money, but as the other reviewer noted the price is WELL worth it and goes to support a developer that really makes rock solid products.
There is no PC version as far as I know.Summary
Buy it. It is truly a great product.

"flawless performance"
Version: PodWorks 2.9.6
Pros
I don't know why this is not more popular. I have been using it for years from tiger through snow leopard. Simple and effective.
Cons
It's not free. But the $8 I spent years ago has paid for itself many times over.
Summary
Super stable. Well worth the 8 bucks.

I love Podworks and have used it for years. I am glad to see that it has been brought back to life. This has been the best tool for pulling the songs off of my iPod time and time again. Kudos!!! -

I bought podworks to enable my 80gb ipod as a storage device for my record collection. It was the most important piece of software I had after iTunes, until about 3 months ago.
As many have pointed out, podworks hasn't been updated for so long that my copy just doesn't work anymore. It crashes on startup or when I try to connect to my pod. Re-installs etc do nothing. The application just doesn't work with the latest versions of itunes and 0s 10.4.9
I'm pleased to see that the developer is working on it once again because as I said before, I would recommend everyone buys it, but only when it's been fixed. Until then steer well clear. -

I had used PodWorks a few years ago without problems, but hadn't used it recently. I used it last weekend to get music off a friend's iPod - and it trashed the iPod! She had to restore the iPod to factory settings. Please be careful with this software - it may have significant incompatibilities with new iPods and iTunes.
Can anyone recommend an alternative?? -
"Why on earth is the raiting for this so high?"

Unless you want to copy just a few songs this application is completely useless. The only way to copy songs is to 'copy selected' and you can only select ONE song at a time. Every time you export a song you have to choose the path to the place you want to export them to again. This means that exporting a single CD takes well over 5 minutes and exporting anything more is a tedious chore. -

What a mess! First I couldn't use the program for 20 minutes because it said my registration number didn't work even though I was cutting and pasting directly from my purchase receipt. Then it finally starting working out of nowhere. After trying to open it, my Ipod--which never gives me trouble-- froze. Itunes wouldn't open, and then it said my Ipod was corrupted!!!!! Now all my music could potentially be gone! I only used this stupid program b/c the HD on my 6 month old MacBook died and my music wasn't backed up. (Didn't think I had to worry about such a new computer)
All I know is, my Ipod was suddenly deemed corrupted after using PodWorks...run. -

I am an newbie to Mac OS and copying or putting back together my itunes music that I lost due to a bad drive from Apple and the lack of the Mac. Store Geniuses that couldnt back up my music before they dumped it?! Then Apple wouldnt let me get my music back so I had to do it from my trusty Ipod. I really like the program and for 8 bucks you cant beat it! It copied all my music flawlessly without a hitch and even copied my album art that I was worried it may not do. It doesnt say if it does on the description of the program that it copied the album art but it does which is important to me. Now if the mac Geniuses could only figuire out how to back up peoples stuff before they delete it maybe I wouldnt have to use a program as good as this. Oh well
