CNET Editors' review
PewPew is a free 2D shooter game with classic vector graphics, a bouncy trance soundtrack, zero back story, and the kind of spare, single-minded gameplay that serious shooter fans will love. The controls are gratifyingly simple: a virtual, 360-degree thumb joystick on each side of the screen, one for moving, one for shooting. PewPew currently only has two levels/modes, both played in a tight arena: "Dodge This," which only uses the movement joystick, as you zoom around picking up spinning boxes and avoiding enemies; and "Assault," which uses both joysticks, as you weave through and mow down endless waves of enemies.
In both modes, you can grab power-ups that boost your shields, and the game ends when you finally succumb to your increasingly numerous opponents (which can sometimes be frustrating when the enemy that deals the deathblow was hiding under one of your thumbs). A separate scoreboard for each level/mode tracks your performance. The developer promises more depth in future releases, but there's already a whole lot of fun to be had here for a free game.
Publisher's Description
From Jean-Francois Geyelin:
You won't find a story in PewPew, this game is for serious gamers. The only goal is to achieve the highest score possible. PewPew is a multi-directional shoot-'em-up game, where you move and shoot using two virtual joysticks. To play, just hold the iPhone/iPod in landscape mode, and use your thumbs to control the joysticks.
Currently there are two game modes, and more are coming. Also, in the next version you will have the ability to submit your scores online.
