CNET Editors' review
PeaZip is a free tool for creating and opening ZIP files quickly and easily. PeaZip can read RAR files, but it cannot write them, the one missing archive format we wish PeaZip could support.
We found PeaZip's interface to be well-designed and user-friendly, but users need to take care when installing this utility as it will install the AVG Security Toolbar and change your homepage and search functions to AVG Secure Search with the default settings. Fortunately you can choose a custom installation that avoids the add-ons. Once installed, the right mouse button brings up the traditional Explorer menu with basic PeaZip capabilities added to it. The default settings for most PeaZip operations will be adequate for most users. In addition to invoking the menu, you can also drag files over the PeaZip desktop icon to archive them, or drag an archive over the icon to uncompress it. Options can be selected to do pretty much any task you'd want to perform with an archiving utility, including adding encryption and optimizing compression formulae.
In operation PeaZip was not noticeably faster or slower than the latest WinZIP version, but PeaZip is free and easier to use for non-hardcore users that don't work with RAR files. Like many Windows users, we have several compression tools installed, and we found we kept returning to PeaZip for its simplicity and common sense defaults. A useful addition to any Windows system.

From Giorgio Tani:
PeaZip is a free ZIP files utility providing a file and archive manager based on solid and proven Open Source technology of 7-Zip for handling mainstream archive formats, and other great Open Source tools (like FreeARC, PAQ, UPX...) for supporting additional file formats and features, in order to provide an all purpose zip/unzip/unrar utility featuring a powerful unified GUI that, unlike most of other classic file archivers like i.e. WinZip and WinRar, is natively portable and cross-platform. Create 7Z, ARC, BZ2, GZ, *PAQ, PEA, QUAD/BALZ, TAR, UPX, WIM, XZ, ZIP files Open and extract over 150 archive types: RAR, ACE, ARJ, CAB, DEB, DMG, ISO, LHA, RPM, UDF, ZIPX files.
PeaZip is localized in 29 languages and is capable of handling all most popular archive formats (150+ file types), supporting a wide array of advanced file and archive management features (search, bookmarks, thumbnail viewer, hashing, find duplicate files, convert archives...), especially focused on security (strong encryption, two factor authentication, encrypted password manager, secure deletion...). The distinctive trait of PeaZip is the innovative and easy to use compression/extraction interface, more similar to CD burners interfaces rather than to a classic file compressor. This design makes extremely simple to check (and update) items set for compression and extraction, integrating a full featured file manager component. Also, tasks created in the GUI can be easily saved as batch scripts, in order to automate backup operations, or for fine tuning, or for learning purpose, bridging the gap between the ease of use of GUI applications and power and flexibility of console.
What's new in this version: Version 4.7.2 adds support to ZPAQ 4.04, introduces various fixes and UI improvements

"another hidden surprize"
Version: PeaZip 4.7.2
Pros
Did not get to the install function-see Cons
Cons
Not until the program was downloaded do you get a forced malware choice. Malware because it is an Unwanted or asked for program. After the download and just prior to Installing you have to:
1)Under Recommended: Take the Avast Homepage that says it must be maintained
2) Take the Avast Search function and
3) Take the Avast Tool Bar
Under Custom option- Take one or more of the 3.
Otherwise - No PeaZip.
I backed out and did a Restore to remove it, but alas- In "hidden files" PeaZip made many entries that will stay-Unless one knows how to erase entries without possibly affecting other programs.
Cnet- Why is this not disclosed?? After the restore, Malwarebytes was corrupted, so it had to be uninstalled-I chose Cnet's "Older Versions". But ALL of those earlier options were False! Those downloads are Actually a link to the newest one! Folks- Look closely at the download name & Ver.#. You may not get what you request. These problems are not unique to these two downloads. -
"It's All you'll Ever Need for File Extraction"
Version: PeaZip 4.7.2
Pros
-Portable version available to those that don't feel the need to install the program.
-Reliable, I've never had to worry about file extraction.
-It's free, and always will be since its Open Source.
-I've always loved that right click option that allows you to extract all now, right in the same folder. Makes the job quick and easy.Cons
I've personally had no problems with the program, it does everything I expect it to do.
BTW, don't bother with spazzytalks' review... You can EASILY change what types of files a program affects in the control panel, or: Right click on the file -> Properties -> Opens with(Click the Change Button) and select the program that you want windows to use for that file type. I hope that helps those that had that problem! -
"Too Invasive"
Version: PeaZip 4.7.2
Pros
does the zop
Cons
Windows are much larger than needed and often pop up when unnecessary. The final straw for me what the way it took over how my system opens files. Using [cntrl] to highlight multiple files I wish to open, hitting enter opens a peazip dialog box for creating a compressed file rather than allowing the files to open in their native program.
Summary
better options are out there
