When it originally debuted, Panda Cloud Antivirus was notable as a free security solution for two reasons: Panda traded on its reputation as a solid security suite vendor making its first foray into the realm of freeware, and the program attained its goal of freeing up system resources by putting much of the program's heavy lifting in the cloud. Now we can add a third reason to the list: it's now known as an effective alternative to the security powerhouses.

When you open Cloud Antivirus, the main window lets you know whether you're safe or not with a big red or green icon. Cloud Antivirus works as other antivirus solutions do, offering a Quick Scan and a Custom scan for specific folder, files, and drives, but its ancillary features are exceptionally light. You can opt out of contributing anonymous data to the cloud, but that also opts you out of automatic threat management. There's a network connection proxy option should you need it, and a reporting feature that will show you what kind of threats have been detected and removed from your computer. You can filter the report by All, Last 24 hours, Last Week, or Last Month, and there's a Recycle Bin pane from which you can recover a false positive, should you need it. The modest level of tweaks and customizations have been hidden behind an obnoxious "flipping" screen that cheesily rotates when you need to access it, but they do provide choices in a clean UI that weren't available before.

CNET Labs' benchmarks determined that Panda Cloud Antivirus Free 1.3 had a small but detectable impact on system performance. It slowed down boot time by just under eight seconds as compared to an unprotected system, while computer shutdown time was more than three seconds slower. However, Cloud Antivirus' virus scan time was a zippy 540 seconds on CNET's test computer, in the top five scan times from suites benchmarked this year. Cloud Antivirus' impact on Microsoft Office was disappointingly large, but impressively the program marked the least impact on the Cinebench test. Overall, the program could have had less of an impact on computer startup times, but does have a very fast scan and caused the least disruption to the Cinebench test.

Security Program Boot time Shutdown time Scan time MS Office performance iTunes decoding Media multitasking Cinebench
Unprotected system 42.5 11.28 n/a 917 180 780 4795
Panda Cloud Antivirus Free 1.3 50.12 14.8 540 1044 199 832 4790

*All tests measures in seconds, except for Cinebench. On the Cinebench test, the higher number is better.

Despite still lacking some of the deeper customization heft that other free antivirus solutions have, most glaringly a scheduler, the program is not necessarily a bad choice for a stripped-down antivirus. It has added a full on-demand scan, and it runs at around 15MB of RAM when idle and around 60MB when scanning. It's a great choice for resource-conscious Netbook users. Panda Cloud Antivirus makes a decent, reasonable security choice for anybody looking to effectively balance security and system performance.

"A cute little panda"

January 30, 2011  |  By Lyronx

 |  Version: Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.3

Pros

Tested against 2011 new viruses and blocked 'em all. I guess the panda kicked their butts.

Cons

None this program is so easy to use even your grandma can do it.

Summary

I recommend this to systems with lower processor speed and less RAM since this doesnt take up so much resources unlike the other heavy AVs (AVG, AVAST, NOD32) and others.

 |  Version: Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.3

Pros

Either way, it ain't nothing.

Cons

False positives happen, but to get a false positive for Stuxnet would be a little unusual.

"So far so good"

January 19, 2011  |  By neil_2

 |  Version: Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.3

Pros

Small, extra-easy user interface. Fast, painless set up.

Cons

I hope it works.

Summary

I've had the Cloud Antivirus so far for about 2 hours.

Very strange, the user interface is very small. It didn't have separate adjustments for Email modules, Web modules, and P2P modules, etc., nothing about updates (except proxy settings). No subscriptions. I didn't add the Panda toolbar, since the Cnet review said it's not necessary.

Just such a small user interface. Easy to use, easy to read. A little panda in my system tray. Easy access to found-virus logs and event reports (I scanned 10 minutes ago).

Maybe I should open up some spam, click on some links therein, and see what the Cloud can do.

"Best no fuss protection available today."

January 13, 2011  |  By El_Dez

 |  Version: Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.3

Pros

Allows your computer to run at optimum speed because it doesnt load tons of signatures onto your computer..they are in "the cloud". This is the best free anti-virus/malware available.

Cons

None that are important to me.

Summary

I have been using this product for months with no problems.
The features are a breeze to use.
My computer is much faster with Panda Cloud than with any other Anti-virus.

"Splendid performance combined with ease of use."

January 08, 2011

 |  Version: Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.3

Pros

Extremely easy to use, very good protection, small memory footprint, plus very low impact on overall computer performance. Designed to keep a clean computer free from any new infections.

Cons

PCA must be installed on a computer which is known to be free of viruses or really nasty malware infections.

Summary

While PCA is extremely good at preventing malware infections on a clean computer, it lags in its ability to fully eradicate some types of malware on an already infected computer. But then again this product is absolutely free and as such it is meant to keep bad stuff off of your computer, rather than being a paid-for product which of course would be much more able to clean up a badly infected computer.

After initially installing PCA, immediately run an Optimized Scan so that PCA will quickly learn about all programs which normally run when you start your computer. Doing this will assure that your computer subsequently will reboot swiftly since PCA will now be aware of all executables which are launched when your computer boots up. An Optimized Scan takes only a few minutes to complete -- you might have time to quickly drink a cup of coffee before the scan completes. After the Optimized Scan completes, simply use your computer as you normally would and basically forget about PCA.

Note that as of the latest 1.3 version, PCA no longer instantly pops up alerts for every infection attempt when several infection attempts occur at the same time. Why? The majority of users found this to be annoying so instead PCA consolidates multiple simultaneous infections into an alert which is displayed a bit later, while in the meantime PCA silently either quarantines or deletes the infection(s). Thus some savvy users might conclude that PCA is not instantly detecting and preventing new infections when in fact it really was.

Note that any previously uninstalled security software from other vendors may not have truly been fully uninstalled when you ran that product's uninstaller. It is best to download and run the stand-alone uninstall tool from that security product vendor before installing PCA because some processes from "uninstalled" security products may still be silently running on your computer, and those silently running processes can cause problems for PCA or other subsequently installed security products for that matter. Hehe. This is one of the problems with trying out security software. After you uninstall a product, it may not truly be completely uninstalled. And that of course could lead you to think that another security product which you subsequently install doesn't work well because it crashes, really slows down your computer when it shouldn't, or doesn't seem to be effective. Yes, security vendors are more or less at war with one another for your business. If for some reason you decided to uninstall PCA, note that PCA does fully and properly uninstall itself so that you won't subsequently have issues with other security software which you might install later.

Give PCA a whirl. After trying PCA you are very unlikely to remove it because in my opinion there simply is not a better free anti-virus / anti-malware product which does an excellent job of protecting your computer, which uses very little memory, which doesn't noticeably slow down your computer, which is extremely easy to use, which doesn't require you to download updates, and which doesn't require you to periodically run full system scans.

PCA also is an excellent choice for netbooks which have less memory and the less capable Atom processors, and for older computers with slow processors and/or limited memory. My preferred combination of free security software, which I use on all of my computers, is PCA plus Threatfire plus Firewall Plus. I like all three of these free programs because they behave very well together, because together they provide excellent overall system protection, because all three have little system performance impact, and because all three are easy to use.

"Not satisfactory"

January 06, 2011  |  By gslv

 |  Version: Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 1.3

Pros

Free. It has some good reviews which I can't assess myself. I ran the free online scan of my computer.

Cons

The threats it found were false. A shortcut to add/remove programs was labelled a Stuxnet trojan. It took much longer than an AVG scan.

Summary

I wonder why this should be called "cloud-based". It downloads itself to your computer, took 135 MB space, and stayed there after finishing. It works within your computer, not from a remote location. I don't know what the great advantage of it is.

Updated on Jan 12, 2011

Panda downloads its cache to your computer to do the scan. Same as every other security program, even Microsoft Defender.
