"No SMTP port specification"

November 02, 2006  |  By jalopy67

 |  Version: POPmonitor 2.1.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
There's no option to specify a different SMTP port. Otherwise, the program worked fine, but I didn't buy it due to the SMTP port limitation.

"ubiquitous, have you tried the software?"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It seems that you really have no idea what you're talking about. If you want a bayesian spam filter for $25, you can buy Spam Sieve, which is a great program. I use it every day, and it is 97.7% accurate on my system.
I also use POPmonitor every day. It allows me to see my incoming email before opening my email program(s). It flags my Spam. It could delete my Spam, but I chose to report it to different people, including SpamCop, so I no longer delete it automatically with POPmonitor.
The point of a blocked senders list is that some spammers will use the SAME address to send their email, at least a couple of times. That's the exception rather than the rule though. By the way, I no longer block spammers, and when I get repeat email from them I simply report them again.
But POPmonitor has more options than blocking senders. As I mentioned, I don't block senders, but guess what? I do use roughly 350 filters that identify spam, and once POPmonitor tells me I have email, I decide what to do with my email, and which email program to open. When I get spam I mostly use Mail, and report it to SpamCop with SpamCop 1.3.2. When I get "good" mail, I use other programs.
Before offering such a low rating, or any rating for that matter, you may want to give it a little more thought.
On the negative side, the filter updating could be simpler and/or automatic.

"Expensive"

For $25, I'd expect a bayesian spam filter, or integration with spamcop.net spam reporting, or both. If the app could block IP ranges, that might be useful.

What's the point of a blocked senders list when spammers use different, forged, from- and reply-to addresses every time they spam? Since the from address is invariably fake, bouncing might make you feel all warm and fuzzy but it's pointless.

"Excellent. A must have."

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I first used POPmonitor in trial form because I thought it was quite expensive to buy. It got daily use and worked well so recently I paid up for the full version to get the benefit of full filtering, multiple accounts and so on. I am glad I did!

I was on the point of shutting one of my e-mail accounts due to the high spamming it receives but I still have it thanks to POPmonitor keeping it purged!

Also, I had a problem due to MY e-mail provider and the developer provided me with a patched version of the app to address this in a matter of hours! Amazing service!

So, in summary - a powerful app with excellent support. Top marks all round!

"Great little application"

February 11, 2004  |  By EddieC

 |  Version: POPmonitor 2.1.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This has helped tremendously in dealing with all the email viruses that have been traversing the digital globe in recent years. Having used it on and off in the pre-OS X days, it's good to see that POPmonitor still continues to carry out its job so effortlessly.

At home it runs on my old 7500 (acting as a server) which has OS 9 installed and POPmonitor has been totally flawless and stable.

Having managed to persuade the company I'm working at to invest in a copy, it is running on a G4 with 10.2.8 but has suffered one or two glitches and application quits. Unfortunately the company runs QuickMail and POPmonitor doesn't support it, so the programs clash once in a while when checking mail and POPmonitor throws up error messages that soon become irritating because when it happens mail isn't filtered and QuickMail can then download all the spam/virus emails that would have otherwise been caught. Liaising with the developer, I gather there's a possibility that QuickMail will be supported in v3 (via AppleScript).

I found the documentation (in PDF form) easy to understand and support from the author to be excellent. However some of the supplied filters are a little too far-reaching, and needed a little editing before letting it loose. The logs are good but, personally, I'd like the option of a bit more detail (which I can then use to help with creating/refining new filters).

Overall POPmonitor is still an invaluable utility, even with the QuickMail problem, and well worth the small fee. For those that don't want to pay, the author has made the free version usable enough for home/light/trial use (which I feel is quite reasonable compared with some other shareware utilities).

"An excellent SPAM KILLER"

December 18, 2003  |  By Barrikady-1942

 |  Version: POPmonitor 2.1.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is an excellent SPAM KILLER. I used a number of different spam killing programs before I settled on POPmonitor. I use it with Eudora and it does the job. I get more than 150 spam messages a day, and POPmoniitor kills them all. Using the program is not as intutitive as i would like, but it does what i want, so I am giving it 5 stars.

"Great"

November 24, 2003  |  By epc

 |  Version: POPmonitor 2.1.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It is one of those applications that get a lot of use on my computer and make my life easier. I do get an "Unexpected Quit" message almost every time I quit version 2.1.2 under Panther. Still, it is very easy to use, and very efective. I would like to see some additions in future versions that allow users to report SPAM directly from POPmonitor. Filtering SPAM is great but that does not stop the spamers, so I also try to report all the SPAM I receive -which thankfully is less than 5 or 10 a week- to the FTC and Spam Cop.
I've used other Spam filtering programs, as well as many custom filters I have created, and always go back to using POPmonitor.

"Stop the darn MS Update 145K spam files"

October 06, 2003  |  By lmacdonald

 |  Version: POPmonitor 2.1.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
POPmonitor has done a fabulous job of identifying and deleting on the server all the hundreds of copies of the Microsoft Update spam file (that is about 154K) for me. I have a 56k connection, so those were killing me.

It is easy to use and the documentation is adequate. It is especially valuable for anyone with a slow connection.
