This Voice-over-IP program holds a lot of promising features, but undermines itself with a clunky interface and quirky installation. PC-Telephone offers all the functions of a corporate phone system: call forwarding, transferring, call waiting, logging, and conference calling. It goes above and beyond with IP-to-IP call encryption, data-file transferring, and even call recording. You can set up multiple voice mailboxes with individual access codes, although the process is tough to figure out, even using the help file.
That's the overall story: we had to refer to the help file to do just about everything, and even with that information, we had to wing it sometimes. Once we had memorized how to perform actions, though, we really appreciated the feature set. We didn't appreciate the installation process, which failed completely on our first test machine and produced access error messages (as well as four icons) on our other two. Also, attempting IP-to-phone calls failed without producing an error message mentioning trial restrictions, so we're still not positive what happened. Though PC-Telephone isn't for most consumers, tech-savvy businesspeople can use it to save a lot of money.
