"Works in a single subnet LAN but not in TS environment"
Version: Outlook Messenger 6.0.39
Pros
- Great features for a LAN-based instant messaging program
- Very nice look and feel
- Straight forward to setup
- Very inexpensive to own ($1.75 / user)Cons
- Does NOT work well in a Terminal Server environment
- Poor Customer/Tech support (email only, takes days for a response)
- Poor overall documentation on the productSummary
I've tried almost every LAN based instant messaging suite available in an effort to find one that is both convenient and familiar to my staff. Outlook Messenger came closest to Microsoft's MSN Messenger by far in regards to look, functionality and ease of use.
Hello all,
During my initial testing, the program worked flawlessly. At the time, it was installed on my single subnet LAN and I was impressed with the fact that it supported Terminal Server environments. Without testing the terminal server portion on more than a few users, I hastily purchased the rather inexpensive software for my 200 user environment of which the majority were Terminal Server users. Unfortunately after many attempts and a few emails to support, I have come to the conclusion that THIS SOFTWARE DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY IN A TERMINAL SERVER ENVIRONMENT. I tried almost everything to get this software working in a TS environment to no avail. For one, the Terminal Server service consistently crashes and requires a manual restart in order to resume. Terminal server users who are signed into OM very rarely show up on everyone's contact list and instead are only sometimes displayed. Other times users are randomly on some client lists and not on others. This is a very annoying issue that has never been resolved by their support team. I have tried the Link Server approach and every thing else listed on their site to resolve this obvious known issue and nothing works.
My honest opinion and suggestion is that you should void using this software within a Terminal Server environment at all costs. It works well within a single subnet LAN however (flat network). Also, I could never get their Outlook Plugin to work with my email client. I am running Outlook 2007.

I'd like to retract my statement regarding the inoperatability of this software within a Terminal Server environment. It was only discovered during a scheduled maintenance windor that the software vendor failed to inform its users that in order for the Link Server to function properly, the server in which it is installed on MUST be restarted before pointing clients to the link server IP/Hostname. I could not find any mention of this anywhere on their website or documentation otherwise.
With that said, the software has since been running well and all users are able to communicate with eachother and are displayed correctly within the contact list.
If you plan on running this software within a Terminal Server environment or if you have more that 30 users, I highly recommend that you use the Link Server option instead of relying on simply your LAN links. -

"Good product, TERRIBLE, NON-EXISTENT tech support!!!!!"
Version: Outlook Messenger 6.0.39
Pros
Product seems to work fine, but I can't get the install complete because they have TERRIBLE tech support!!
Cons
Oh, did I mention they have TERRIBLE tech support!!!
Summary
Bottom line is that the product seems to work fine. It has several nice features and is easy to use. But, if you need help, forget it. I have sent 5 emails to tech support asking very simple questions about the product. I am computer tech, have been for 17 years, and have never had this much trouble with a simple question from any tech support group. Their website does not contain all the info necessary to install and configure the product completely. I am installing on a Terminal Services Server and have issues. No reply to any request for info and help. The product works fine on a network with stand alone PCs. Good luck if you choose this product.
