"Works well when pasting text from other apps"

    March 22, 2011   |   By kenrick--2008

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

Handles 2 byte characters (eg Chinese) well as long as you paste from another app. It's free.

    Cons

Working with OS 10.6 the File menu didn't always function properly, so that I had to quit and relaunch. Typing two byte characters and using the style drop down menu produces erratic results.

    Summary

I normally use Pagespinner and shall continue to do so. However Nvu solved a problem for me as Pagespinner wouldn't accept UTF-8 (or UTF-16 or Big5) double byte text copied from another app and Nvu would.
However if you want to type Chinese directly into the page, use another editor. (Nvu did work but I had to type in Chinese, then switch input to English and only then format the page.)

    Pros

it does what is supposed to do.

    Cons

I havn't found a place to use it yet.
Not enough time with the program to see how robust it is.

    Summary

I may give it another try. Not enough time with the program to see how robust it is.

"didn't work for me on a mac"

    November 13, 2008   |   By pupper99

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

nvu may be great on a pc, but it was useless for me on a mac. the pro obviously is that it was free.

    Cons

i couldn't use nvu on a mac and i ended up ponying up the $80 for iweb, which was totally worth it (not just the product but also the awesome support).

    "Good, basic HTML editor"

    July 26, 2008   |   By t045t

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

Easy to configure and use, don't really have to know anything about how HTML works to get it to make a basic web page. Easy to choose colors, fonts, tables, etc. Advanced features let the user insert meta tags and tweak how the page displays.

    Cons

In CSS mode it is clunky and gawdawful. Have to reset your settings with every paragraph, and the finished code is almost as bad as Trellis. Not recommended for doing CSS.

    "A Nice Application!"

    March 30, 2008   |   By wjreynolds

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

Nvu seems to be a smooth-working, fairly intuitive application. I installed it for a "quick fix" on a web page while I await an upgrade on my "regular" HTML program, Dreamweaver, but I might not fuss with Dreamweaver and just stick it Nvu.

    Cons

Too many trips to the menu, i.e., I'm not finding as many keyboard shortcuts or tabs as I'm accustomed to. Unless they'll reveal themselves through more use...

    "Fairly Pleasant"

    October 01, 2007   |   By Queenbee65

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

It's fairly easy to use. It has a lot of room for growth for those developing new skills, so you can learn as you go. It includes it's own FTP which is nice. It seems relatively stable. There is a lot of documentation available to help you learn this program.

    Cons

They really should have included an installer for this. Many people seem to have a problem with installing. I had no problem with it, since I had seen the warnings NOT to install it as the dmg, but to use the icon within that folder to install it. But it's always important to check on that with anything Mac, since some things install differently. Otherwise, I have no complaints about it.

"Mostly useful; occasional lockups requiring restart."

    September 01, 2007   |   By pauljgeiger

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

Ease of use; wysiswyg performance. Can't afford or would even use all the power of Dreamweaver-- just too much. NVU mostly fills the bill and I'm using OS X 10.4.10. You must read the readme file so you don't get the deadly infinite loop.

    Cons

The occasional lockups requiring restart of the program.

"What you tell it to do is what it does, be careful!"

    February 13, 2007   |   By gdinkins

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

This program does exactly what you tell it to do. I like the copy and paste feature. After using it for 6 months, I find it to be the best free program avaliable.

    Cons

Watch the mishaps with you keyboard. entries are duplicated and placed inside your work without notice. A user should be careful when entering work as the program is unforgiving. I suggest one make corrections in Microsoft Word or Works, then transfer by pasting into Nvu. Do not enter commas or quotes after they are inside the editor, They will not look correct.

"Excellent software for both the beginner & novice."

    September 10, 2006   |   By anwagirl

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

Nvu 1.0 is an excellent WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get)HTML editor. It's simple enough for the beginner, and easily manipulated for more experienced HTML'ers.

"Great for newer equipment.. Sucks on anything else.."

    July 07, 2006   |   By Bordy97

    Version: Nvu 1.0

    Pros

it has that tried and true composer feel.. easy to install.. easy to figure out..

    Cons

I tried this on a B&W G3 (350mhz / 512mb ram / OSX 10.4.7) ... that's not a good combination for this app.. it really needs more machine.. which means I really need to find a different editor..

Oh well.. better luck next time?
