CNET Editors' review
Notepad Plus Plus is a Notepad replacement with an eye toward programmers, although it should also appeal to the casual user who wants a cross between Notepad and WordPad. Notepad Plus Plus has some noticeable differences from WordPad. Support for tabs is key, letting users manage different documents simultaneously. Line-numbering is important, too, a feature that nobody mucking about in C should be without.
The interface is much simpler compared with some of its competitors. A familiar row of icons with their mouse-over labels sits at the top, and one row of tabs is just below that. The rest of the screen is made of nothing but pure white space. All the coding tools live in the menu bar, with some represented on the toolbar. Users can compile and run macros, convert text to Hex, submit directly to W3C for validation, launch in Firefox and IE, and more. There's also a built-in spell-checker.
Choosing between Notepad Plus Plus and NoteTab Light probably will depend as much on layout as anything else. Although, forgive the pun, notably Notepad Plus Plus can not autoreplace Notepad, it's still an excellent Notepad replacement.

"Easy to Use"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
easy to use, the colour coding is also useful if you make mistakes.
Cons
none yet ?????
-
"Easy to code with"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
The color coding and indentation make it easy to see what I'm doing and catch mistakes. Intuitive with its multiple tabs, "close all but this" etc.
Cons
I can't think of any.
Summary
It just works without fuss and gets the job done.
-
"Worked like a charm"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
I only needed this to edit (often) a config file. It works like a charm. I am not familiar with all the tools, but it does what I need it to.
Cons
None that I know of???
-
"The best text editor"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
Keeps files in tabs until you close them, so they are there if you close, then reopen Notepad++. Add-ons to support many, many programming languages. Does not lock files, so you can use a file even while it is open in Notepad ++.
Cons
It doesn't seem to work well with huge files greater than 100 mB or so.
-
"Powerful and very useful"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
Very "rich" application - Plenty of options and possibilities - Display is really user-friendly (and programmers-friendly) - Loads fast - Free -
Cons
Maybe too frequent updates, even if you can disable the automatic update check.
-
"good editor except to replace words"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
Very handy with different type of layouts, e.g. XML, C#, Java, etc
Cons
Replacing characters/ words, it's too complicated.
On top of that, if the file is more than 10,000 lines, it takes ages to replace a single char.
Much faster is notepad, for instance. I prefer ultraedit.Summary
Good for small files. For IT people, it does not work if files are more than 10K lines.
-
"Slower than ever before but still powerful"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
Great add-ins, simple and clear interface, many supported languages, FREE, small in size, customizable appearance, and more
Cons
It takes long time and occupies a lot of system resources to handle large files (from 10MB). Start-up is no longer fast as previous versions. Need to do more on tabs.
Summary
Pros and Cons have told almost everything I'd like to say about this program. I just want to conclude that this is a valuable and should-have product.
-
"It is a great tool, however it could be better!"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
The ability to work with text with no problems.
Cons
The lack of the ability to integrate it with my free pascal compiler and run code on the fly.
Summary
I like it for it capabilities and I have a dislike of the fact that I must run my go external of it to run my code after compile.
-
"fast and simple"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
works well
Cons
I doin't have any complaints
-
"Solid editor, better than a lot of paid applications"
Version: Notepad++ 5.7
Pros
Easy to use, allows ftp connections, color coding support for a wide variety of programming languages
Cons
No cons except that I had to dig around a little to find how to add an ftp connection.
Other than that it is perfection.
I don't understand why anyone would give a bad review to this product given the fact that it is free.Summary
For us programmers who can't afford Zend Studio or Visual Studio on our personal machines, this is a great program to use for quick code changes and grunt work where you don't need Intellisense and debugging support.
