Although Symantec provides users with a full-function 15-day trail of its Norton Internet Security 2008 program, which is good, there are a few gotchas along the way.

One, to download, you must provide your name and e-mail address to Symantec. Two, you will be asked to provide name, address, and phone number before continuing (although we found that by hitting Next three times, we were finally offered a Skip option).

Once installed, the protection provided by Norton is quite good, even excellent, removing viruses, spyware, and rootkits alike while blocking malware from the Internet. We could do without the thick, oppressive interface, and we wish there were more configuration options beyond enable or disable, and more documentation to explain these options.

We found that if you turn off the antiphishing protection, you may be prompted to use Identity Safe personal information on fraudulent Web sites--not good. And we experienced some performance issues, with LiveUpdate slowing our machine to a crawl.

Finally, beware of the premium services being offered in the technical support section; for example, having an expert remotely repair your compute could cost you $69. There is an uninstall option within the Norton Internet Security 2008 trial, although after our 15-day trial period ended, we needed to use the Norton Removal Tool to completely remove all traces. While companies leave some data behind to prevent serial-trial users, Norton leaves behind more registry changes and files than most.

"Effective laissez-faire protection"

August 13, 2009  |  By Lessthancharmed

 |  Version: Norton Internet Security 2008

Pros

Don't have to think about it.

Cons

It does stuff without asking you.

Summary

I used to hate Norton and use a combination of AntiVir, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and spywareblaster... then I bought a laptop with NIS pre-installed and decided to give it a try. It seems to be effective, especially when running Vista and browsing with Firefox, and you don't have to bother doing anything manually. This a fast machine with 4 gigs of RAM, and I'm not sure I'd want to be running it on a less powerful PC, but I'm very happy with how unobtrusive and thorough it is.

"The reviews which say that Norton sucks is a lie."

May 01, 2009  |  By steinvin

 |  Version: Norton Internet Security 2008

Pros

That Norton was was a problem many years ago. You'll be very surprised when you see the massive improvements since then. That it provides bad protection is also an old-fixed problem.

Cons

Maybe the boot-up time may take a while sometimes (Compared to ESET).

Summary

I will say that Norton is worth the money and provides fast and good protection.

"Might as well be a virus itself"

December 22, 2008  |  By starlingseven

 |  Version: Norton Internet Security 2008

Pros

NONE - but for some reason this box needs more than 10 characters so here is the filler text.

Cons

slowed my system to a crawl, can't seem to fully uninstall it. I don't know how symantec consistently manages to create such sucky products in such GIGANTIC packages

Summary

It came pre-installed on my computer. I tried to uninstall it using Norton's proprietary "uninstall" thing - nope. it uninstalled everything but the firewall which is running alongside Windows firewall. I reinstalled the program again just to shut down the firewall and it automatically shut down all of Windows Security along with Norton firewall. Such utter total garbage. So then when I got the security I wanted up and running again without the Norton firewall, I uninstalled the program thinking it was all overwith after half a day of hassle. Nope. It made sure the firewall was turned back on right before it was uninstalled. Oh - and their tech support? Completely inaccessible if you need to talk to a human.

"Great Internet Security. Better than CA and Kaspersky."

September 01, 2008  |  By netshape28

 |  Version: Norton Internet Security 2008

Pros

A very good internet security. It has a privacy cleaner, spyware cleaner, virus cleaner, firewall, and many other security features. It does not consume as much CPU activity as CA and Kaspersky. It has a good interface and many nice features. Nice.

Cons

It will slow down old computers or computers that do not have an adequate amount of memory or space.

Summary

Great product with many nice features. If you are looking for a good internet security package, this product is for you.

"Perfect"

August 20, 2008  |  By bradward747

 |  Version: Norton Internet Security 2008

Pros

Its fast, newly improved, SONAR helps what it catches. Blocks hi-jacked websites. Protects against software holes. Has a solid firewall, hasn't let a single problem trough. No false positives, and no crashes!

Cons

Getting expensive!

Parental controls, and spam filter have been left on the self.

Support is still slow/not smart.

"100% fraudulent "

August 19, 2008  |  By 0zSpit

 |  Version: Norton Internet Security 2008

Pros

i like how they pay c/net and pcworld to give them good reviews to push the worst programs ever made, off on people.

Cons

norton still owes me money for 2005 rebate. they offer rebates then refuse to pay out. then they push their garbage program off like it's useful, knowing full well it the worst thing you could ever put on a computer. then old outdated malware like coolwebsearch shut's down norton like cops on a **********, and starts sending out every bit of information on your computer. while even worst programs like spyware doctor have to clean up nortons mess. on top of the security program running through every bit of your computer it has live updates running constantly, slowing down your computer more. norton is the biggest scam company ever. nothing has ever infected a computer worse than a norton program. every employee should be put in prison for fraud an every person who has ever been taken by a norton product should get their money returned plus interest. norton should make a program called anti-norton virus remover, and they already do. get it now!!!

"Great security suite. Have yet to even get malware with my setup."

August 18, 2008  |  By Narmo23

 |  Version: Norton Internet Security 2008

Pros

Most of you guys are a) very uninformative, b) Norton haters (which automatically translates into "Hey, I have a slow computer!" because you guys complain about bloatware -- most new computers are decent enough to handle lots of stress while performing great), and c) dumb.

I'm going to disregard the dumb posts, and go straight to JoyceNgo's post -- a post that only looks informative only because it's neatly structured, but that's about it. First off, this person claims that "Sometimes with no detections at all, you wasted about four hours of your life just for a full system scan." Really? Because on my 160G HDD + 250G External HDD, my scan (which scans about 170,000+ items), only takes about 15-20 minutes (maybe a little less, or a little more, but definitely does not take more than half an hour). Take into consideration that I'm using a 9300 Inspiron -- a computer that I bought back in '05. The only upgrades I did for this computer were the following: added a 1G stick of RAM (1G to 2G), and upgraded the HDD from 60G to 160G (both at 5400 RPM, so this change doesn't affect speed at all).

Let's talk about memory usage: it shouldn't affect your computer at all. This laptop of mine plays TF2, a memory/graphic intensive game, with Norton on. The game runs smooth (60 FPS, drops down to 50-55 every once in awhile when there's lots of action going on). This example is to tell you that even with Norton on, I can still play such a game without worrying about any memory hiccups. I highly doubt your mom really needs to worry about the whole "memory intensive" issue since she'll most likely just be browsing the net.

"You get what you pay for." is something that I definitely believe in. If you don't like the price tag, go ahead and get something else. Just don't tell me that the free AV programs do a better job -- by saying this, you obviously do not go to many "non-trusted" sites.

Cons

The only gripe I have is the fact that a system startup takes longer with such a program. However, that's because it's loading up modules to keep your behind safe :) And really, I can endure a 10 second "Welcome" screen as opposed to an immediate "Welcome" screen (one w/ NIS and one w/o, obviously).

Pros

Solid protection.. never sowed down my pc. i've used all AV available in market and norton is the best.
