Norton AntiVirus 2014 is the latest from one of the oldest names in anti-virus software. With protection for one PC, it's the most affordable of Symantec's premium packages. OK, we know what you're thinking: Why should you buy an anti-virus program, let alone one with an annual subscription, when freeware that does most of what it does is...well, free? Our two-part answer: 1) You get what you pay for, even in software; and 2) What's your system worth? How about your time? Or peace of mind? AntiVirus 2014 comes with the 24/7 technical support that those free anti-virus tools actually charge for. Norton's not only ad-free but also has one of the most up-to-date interfaces and user-friendly toolkits we've seen. Of course it offers comprehensive real-time virus protection and cleaning, automatic updates, and extras like anti-spam tools. But Norton AntiVirus 2014 also protects you from emerging threats, identity theft, and even online scams. You can try it for free.

Norton's setup wizard detects any conflicting anti-virus programs and advises uninstalling them before installing AntiVirus 2014. It also prompts you to create (or sign in to) an account that lets you manage your Norton products, and contact support, and access online resources. The program's 3D-enhanced user interface has Norton's attractive yellow-and-black look. We found copious explanations at each step, including pop-ups, and clicking "Support" accessed Help files, Tutorials, and other resources. We were tempted to start by exploring some of AntiVirus 2014's extras, such as its Performance tools and SONAR exclusions, but the first place to start with a new anti-virus tool is always a full-system scan. Norton's is thorough and takes some time, though Quick and Custom Scans save time in daily maintenance. With our system protected, we then scoped out the extras, including the Repair Tool and Scan Facebook Wall Tool, and found both had the same detailed user guidance and easy-to-follow steps.

Norton AntiVirus 2014's comprehensive protection, painless updates, extensive extras, and 24/7 support make for affordable peace of mind. If you've been relying on freeware, or haven't yet added this necessary protection to your system, this is well worth checking out.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of Norton AntiVirus 2014 20.1. The trial version is limited to 30 days.

"Do Not Waste your money! Bogware!!"

March 07, 2014  |  By onemanvolt

 |  Version: Norton AntiVirus 2013 20.1

Pros

Pretty Icon

Cons

Bogware! Slows down the machine with unneeded crap designed just to keep their name out front.
Problem plagued: I have seen many different malware easily take out or disable Norton Antivirus. The free antivirus programs, like AVG and Avira, are much more efficient than the bogware that is Norton.

Summary

Norton has been around for a long time and for a long time has been the bane of PC's most of that time.

"THE WORST Anti-Virus"

January 01, 2014  |  By computerguy14

 |  Version: Norton AntiVirus 2013 20.1

Pros

None thus far

Cons

Probably the WORST Anti-Virus in existence. Each year it gets harder to full remove. I have cleaned many infected Norton Machines and have seen it let by MANY viruses.

Summary

Do not purchase, Norton or McAfee. I work in a computer shop and see it all of the time. I highly recommend a combination of ESET Smart Security, Super Anti Spyware, and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Your system will thank you later.

"they still sell this thing?"

December 28, 2013  |  By Papad_Mirchi

 |  Version: Norton AntiVirus 2013 20.1

Pros

Once you buy this, you will realize what a mistake you committed. Since one learns from his/her mistakes, that's the only pro I can think of. You will learn NOT to buy **** like this in the future.

Use any free AV (like Avast) or just switch to Linux. Why waste time and money over virus problems? Don't you think you can do better things instead?

Cons

Having to think about what to write under pros.

"Almost like a rogue antivirus."

September 28, 2013  |  By weegee2899

 |  Version: Norton AntiVirus 2013 20.1

Pros

There are no pros whatsoever.

Cons

When I had it way back in let's say 2007 or 2008, it let a trojan virus get by and it probably let tons of more viruses let by. This antivirus is a joke. Do not waste your money on this POS.

"FRAUD AND USELESS!!! DO NOT PURCHASE OR DO BUSINESS"

September 10, 2013  |  By ngon251978

 |  Version: Norton AntiVirus 2013 20.1

Pros

CRAP!!!!!!!!!!

Cons

This protection system SUCKS! I have better luck finding and fixing issues with Microsoft's free virus/malware/spyware protection this is bullcrap!

ALSO - they charged by debit card for an automatic subscription renewal THAT I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR. I now have to use my time to fix with both my bank and Norton for a refund. PIECE OF CRAP SERVICE!!!

Summary

DO NOT DO BUSINESS! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!

"This program is worse than a virus"

August 13, 2013  |  By bmallek540

 |  Version: Norton AntiVirus 2013 20.1

Pros

Absolutely nothing at all!

Cons

Everything!! I've had trojan viruses that were easier to get rid of.

Summary

Make sure that you really want this program or you're stuck with it. Norton says it has an uninstaller program. I downloaded it, ran it and it said that it couldn't locate any Norton products on my computer. I finally contacted their support chat page. The rep was very helpful but even he had a difficult time uninstalling the program. Watching him uninstall the program remotely there is probably a couple of hundred different ways that you can try to uninstall but that just reactivates the program. Really, I'm surprised no one has taken legal action against Norton.

"Best of the Best"

August 02, 2013  |  By NahNood

 |  Version: Norton AntiVirus 2013 20.1

Pros

-Comprehensive protection.
-"Norton Security Suite" (Norton 360 clone) free for Comcast customers.

Cons

-Some features may be overkill (but NOT meaning "bloated").
-It costs money for non-Comcast users.

Summary

Norton/Symantec no longer deserves a bad rep for its av offerings. Norton 360 is now one of the top performing av solutions available, with very high detection/protection rating. It does not slow down my system, in fact it performs much better than other av's because of its cache system (skips re-scanning good rep files over time).

Would I pay for this, though? Well, no, I'm only using it because it's free for folks on Comcast cable (I would choose avast! Free instead). :)

"Slows your computer to a snail's pace"

July 29, 2013  |  By begemotgeroi

 |  Version: Norton AntiVirus 2013 20.1

Pros

Nothing I can think of.

Cons

Pretty much everything. Load time, makes your computer run slower, doesn't catch all the viruses, rootkits, worms, bad registry keys like it says it does. Waste of money.

Summary

I swear, every time I install NAV or N360, I end up having to do a full system restore back to a point when it wasn't on my computer because it eats a TONNE of resources and slows the load time of everything way down. I just had to do two system restores in the last 24 hours. I'm just gonna download Avast & MalwareBytes and be done with this crap. Also, their yearly subscription is ridiculously expensive. I don't know why I even bother.
