Publisher's description of Norton AntiVirus 2009
From Symantec:Norton AntiVirus 2009 provides fast, responsive defense against all types of malicious software including viruses, spyware, worms, and other software threats. It protects your system without slowing it down. Rapid pulse updates every 5 to 15 minutes help to ensure that you're protected from the latest threats.
Working quickly and quietly in the background, Norton AntiVirus requires little memory and system resources. The new Norton Insight relies on extensive online intelligence to target only those processes at risk, resulting in faster, shorter, fewer scans. And the new Norton Protection System employs a multilayered set of security technologies that work in concert to detect, identify, and block attacks. Version 2009 improves on product performance.

- "Norton remains strong"
- Version reviewed: Norton AntiVirus 2009 16.0
Symantec has been listening to its users, and this year the company delivers a slimmed-down and faster Norton AntiVirus 2009. Almost all the security vendors this year have recognized the changing threat landscape and have rethought traditional protection. Norton Antivirus 2009 is available as a full-function download, free for 15 days.
We especially like the Insight feature, which identifies "trusted" files and applications and doesn't waste time rescanning them unless there's been a change. No other product does this. The redesigned logic behind Norton AntiVirus 2009 clearly shows in CNET performance testing: it is faster and considerably lighter than last year's version. Norton continues to win awards in third-party effectiveness testing. Lagging behind, though, is Symantec's technical support. While Norton users now have free telephone support, Symantec still doesn't provide enough of a knowledge base, or even an adequate user's manual.
Once again, this year it emphasizes its premium services a bit too much. That said, Norton AntiVirus 2009 presents a remarkable transformation of a product and is worth a second look.

Version: Norton AntiVirus 2009 16.0
Pros: Nice looking interface and easy to use.
Cons: Norton came with my computer pre installed. Norton slows my computer down while in fullscan. It also slows down my boot up and boot down time and I am using 1 GB of memory. You can get better anti virus for free like Avast.

Version: Norton AntiVirus 2009 16.0
"Slow, resource intensive and doesn't work properly"
Pros: Nice GUI, broad range of features, reasonably easy to use
Cons: Ridiculously resource intensive, slowing other applications to a crawl if running a scan. Full system scans are amazingly slow - I often just gave up. Still missed malware that other antivirus/antispyware programs picked up.

Version: Norton AntiVirus 2009 16.0
"must be computer pro to deal with this"
Pros: In view of the cons have no positive opinion
Cons: Came pre-installed 30day trial, I renewed, pd $49 for 12 months, when I go to site, says my sybscriptioin has expired, and phising protetion off can't figure out how to turn on phising. Also, when chatting for help wait time long so I give up.
Summary: Customer support is non existing unless you have all day to resolve. Free protection comes with my IP, but being a dummy decided to pay for norton's pay version thinks it would be seamless--not so. The preloaded version was fine. Still will liketo ... read more >>

Version: Norton AntiVirus 2009 16.0
Pros: Slick user interface
Cons: Brought my computer to its knees making it virtually unusable
Summary: Takes forever to boot up and once up application and internet windows would lock up. Screen would turn gray, ctrl-alt delete unusable. Uninstalled 2009 and re-installed same result. I'm going back to version 2008.
