From Nitroglobal :Nitro uses a patented compression technology giving you a broadband Internet speed from your dial-up connection. Broadband and DSL is not available to everyone, but with Nitro everyone can have the broadband experience. Performance tests in the United States have shown that connection speeds can be improved up to 5 times over a standard modem. Nitro also works on handheld devices such as Pocket PC2003, Macintosh, and soon to be released for Symbian phones. You can get the benefits of accelerated GPRS, reducing the amount of data, and increasing performance. Nitro also adds benefit to low-speed DSL connections by reducing the amount of data that is downloaded. Nitro accelerates HTTP, FTP, SMTP, and POP3, speeding up browsing, FTP downloads, and e-mail traffic. It also has pop-up window blocking.
