CNET Editors' review
Trying to be all things to all people, this newsgroup reader simply complicates the process. NewsMan Pro's interface is a jumble of panes, dialogs, buttons, and status messages. This isn't a program you'll pick up in a few minutes. Newsgroup novices will probably uninstall in frustration while even experienced users will run to the online documentation for help. Installation seems easy until you have to choose from the included database or pick an SQL option. Novices should stick with the default database and leave SQL account permissions to the experienced users.
Operating Newsman Pro isn't simple enough to explain in this short review. Suffice it to say, read the manual twice. After spending time on setup, downloading messages isn't a simple click. There are pull-down menus to select, buttons to push, and selections to make. If you're lucky you might be able to read a post. That's just for simple text posts. Grabbing binary files is even more complicated.
This is the perfect newsreader, though, if you're a person who likes tweaking configuration settings, adding automation rules, and setting schedules. Except for a few options locked on this freeware version, you can change settings galore. Message panes can be easily moved. Layouts are saved and brought back with a quick click.
As the name implies, Newsman Pro isn't for the novice newsgroup reader. However, if you have a desire to explore a complex app, download this one and give it a shot.
Publisher's Description
From Dan Cumpian:
This powerful, multi-threaded newsreader fully supports all Usenet text and binary newsgroups. Handles multiple servers seamlessly using server priorities and/or as discrete "private" news servers. Uses "virtual groups" for newsgroup subscriptions allowing you to browse related newsgroups simultaneously. Unique expiration-based Queue ensures that requested articles are retrieved in a timely fashion. Supports Automation, Scheduling and much more.
Version 2.0 build 2.0.0.4 increased speed of inserting new jobs into the Queue by a factor of 5 and changed message deletion to not show the progress window if less than five messages are selected and the messages are being moved to the Trash.
