This overly simplistic feed reader lacks the features and flexibility found in more polished RSS readers. We were completely under-whelmed by News Messenger right from the start. For an application that's supposed to handle such a relatively new technology, the awkward installation seems outdated. The interface is nothing more than a compact window that displays the headlines from the selected feeds. The default option is keep the window on top, but it is just a nuisance to full-screen applications. Unfortunately, the only display options are to set the transparency and align the window to the left or right.

News Messenger is preloaded with a hodgepodge of computer and IT-related feeds. It's a fairly simple process to add feeds, and you can easily display your chosen feed by selecting it from the pull-down menu. Only headlines are displayed, forcing you to click to load the site to read the full story. This disappoints those who prefer readers that display both the headline and full text of the article.

The best thing that can be said about News Messenger is that it's free and fairly simple to use, but it is easily outclassed by the many more robust freeware feed readers.
