Nethack was created back when GUIs were brand new and the text-based games ruled. Hack is one of the first to come out. Get a blast from the past and spend many a night guiding your character through dungeons, eating corpses, killing newts, raiding Dwarven mines and much more. The redrawn and random dungeons and countless types of enemies make it exciting with massive replay-ability. Find powerful potions, rings and scrolls and the special effects they produce. Naming your pets and tamed monsters makes Nethack an old school gem to be appreciated forever.

"A legendary game!"

Pros
1. Amazingly random!
2. A huge amount of variants to be found.
3. A very active and dedicated telnet server. (nethack.alt.org)
4. The Dev team thinks of everything!
5. Endless replay ability!
6. Has influenced modern RPG's including heavyweights such as the Diablo series!
7. Source code is freely available.
8. Has its own IRC Channel (#Nethack)
9. Available in a tiled version for beginners and original ASCII for veterans.
10. Death in game can be quite hilarious at times.
11. Very small size.
12. Cross platform.
13. Possibly the most popular of the "Big 4" of Roguelikes.Cons
1. Somewhat steep learning curve for beginners.
2. Perma-death is unpopular to those unaccustomed to it.
3. Is very difficult to actually win the game.Summary

This is personally my favorite computer game, and for a good reason. I would recommend you download it from the Dev Team's website though, to be sure you have the most up to date version. Happy Hacking! -

Good training for the also free and relatively lovely Pocket PC WM6 version. (nethack.org) So that you can underatnd what's going on when you play that.

I agree with Spooky. This has had its time on the big screen.

I am all for gaming nostalgia, and frequently play classic games, but this is taking it a little to far for my tastes. This is one piece of gaming history I would rather forget.
