Version: Mozy Remote Backup 1.8.04
"Mozy Rocks. Here's How To Get MORE Free Storage"
Pros: How to get the extra storage: Don't just use the download.com link...that only gets you the base 2 gigs. Instead, use a Mozy referral link. Here's mine: https://mozy.com/?ref=LDBPV7 This gets you the latest version & gives you (& me) an extra quarter gig (256 megs) of storage. (Or enter code LDBPV7 in the signup form to get your extra storage. And thanks in advance for helping me out in turn.)
I want to focus on some less-understood but crucial benefits Mozy gives you for free, Versioning & Undeleting.
VERSIONING
Versioning is the automated saving of each edition of files as they change over time, letting you recover ANY of the previous versions. Why is this useful? Perhaps you realize that 3 months ago, you did something that screwed up your Quicken database, and now Quicken has long ago wiped any trace of the good file.
Mozy to the rescue! Mozy automatically, invisibly saves your previous versions for you. Should you ever want to restore a file, you can choose which edition you want -- the latest, or any of the previous ones. This has saved my bacon on more than once!
RECOVER MISTAKENLY DELETED FILES
Obviously, Mozy saves the files you currently have. But it also saves the files you USED to have. In other words, when you trash a file locally, Mozy doesn't delete it from its archive. Want to get a long-deleted file back? Simply right-click in the folder where the file used to live. A window pops up showing every file that ever existed in that folder. Right-click on the icon of the file you want to recover and it's back on your local machine in seconds. (I just tested this feature. In 20 seconds, Mozy restored a 5mb file I deleted over 13 months ago...wow!)
I cannot recommend Mozy highly enough. And the 2 gigs the free account gives you (2.25 gigs with the referral link below) should be more than enough for most users. Completely free. No brainer. Get it and relax...you're covered.

Version: Mozy Remote Backup 1.8.04
Pros: I tried other backup solutions but this is by far the best solution for me. It runs constantly on your computer and backs up files everyday but is a small footprint and it has never bothered my computer usage. The initial backup took a long time but after that it did incremental backups. You can setup configuration sets where it will look only for certain file extensions in certain folders or simply just tell it to back up all files in any folder. It will find new and updated items and back them up without you ever having to worry about it. I use the free solution so can't backup big files like music but I back up all my documents and pictures and I will never lose another picture again!
Restoring is easy, you can simply go to a directory you want to restore and right-click and choose "restore files" from the menu. Alternatively, you can go on the web and download data sets which can be all your files or you can pick and choose which files to download.
Also, they have a very fun blog (though they don't update it much) - much better than you're average "new release" type of blog.
I highly recommend Mozy for someone who wants a simple easy to use backup solution.
Cons: This product assumes you have broadband.
As far as I can tell, Mozy does not automatically backup its own configuration files which means if you have to reformat the hard drive or you get a new one you have to reset up Mozy all over again. In such a case you also have to download files from the internet to restore.
You can figure out which files contain the Mozy configuration and back them up. I have yet to test it fully in this regard but I wish they would have more support on how to do this automatically and easily.
This program still deserves 5 stars!
