CNET Editors' review
Despite perceptions to the contrary, the desktop-based e-mail client is not dead. Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0 is a serious reaction to the prevalence of Web mail, so whether you're looking for a strong desktop client, an Outlook replacement, or a powerful tool for managing archives and Web mail offline, Thunderbird can scale to your needs.
Outlook users will notice the speed and responsiveness of the program, which loads quickly, even when weighed down by multiple folders and RSS feeds, and the basic feature set remains intact: good junk mail filters, HTML support, multiple identities, and robust Web mail, POP, IMAP, and Microsoft Exchange server support. Security features include S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, and a built-in phishing detector. Add-ons, based on the same code as Firefox's add-on network, can enhance your security even further.
Joining such useful features as the back and forward e-mail browsing buttons and customizable tags in version 3.0 are a set of must-have features. The powerful search tool integrates results with desktop searches on Windows Vista and Windows 7, while tabs reinforce the connections between Web browsing and e-mail reading. In fact, the new search tool is so powerful that if you have a massive number of e-mails, you may want to set it to index them overnight lest it drain system resources from other programs. Gmail support especially has been revamped, so you now get an All Mail folder in Thunderbird, among other improvements. Mozilla's new Personas skins work in Thunderbird, while the Lightning add-on supplies the missing Microsoft Exchange-compatible calendar feature.
Flexible, powerful, and lightweight, Thunderbird 3 is an appropriate companion to Firefox in every way.

"Very good alternative to the Outlook."
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 16.0.1
Pros
Intuitive. Import Outlook contacts and folders.
Cons
No wingdings fonts (if some smiles, but not the font), and the mails received with this font and others are difficult to read. Outlook rules are better. No button to access the address book from writing an email. Sometimes I can copy and paste text messages received. Insert multiple email addresses in Outlook is easier with the window that can be sent to the CO, CC or CCC.
Summary
While it has some limitations against Outlook, being a free, turns the balance towards this product. It's weird not having Wingdings font has some smiles but not the complete font.

"Excellent default e-mail program for Windows."
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 16.0.1
Pros
Comprehensive; secure; easy to use for News, POP and IMAP accounts; clean set up of accounts; installs easily; Good GUI, with themes available; handles add-ons; updated regularly and automatically by Mozilla, and the app is Free.
Cons
Spam filtering, though adequate, is limited. Recommend using 'Spamihilator' with TB for comprehensive filtration.
Summary
Nice app, give it a shot.

"Using Thudnerbird now is horrible!"
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 16.0.1
Pros
Loved the simplicity and able to switch between e mail names.
Cons
Having a problem now (says it can't empty the trash under one name and won't hold passwords on others.
biggest con is I can't get help!!Summary
Having two major major problems. Out of the blue I am getting messages that says Thunderbird can't fetch my deleted items to empty them. Also won't hold some e mail passwords. I have deleted all the e mails names and put them back in. Have deleted Thunderbird all together, twice, and still keeps on doing this. Have posted on the forum of Thunderbird for help with no response. Trying desperately to find an alternative as I can't keep dealing with this. It just is horrible that I can't get help. So will have to find another system.
