CNET Editors' review
Despite perceptions to the contrary, the desktop-based e-mail client is not dead. Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0 is a serious reaction to the prevalence of Web mail, so whether you're looking for a strong desktop client, an Outlook replacement, or a powerful tool for managing archives and Web mail offline, Thunderbird can scale to your needs.
Outlook users will notice the speed and responsiveness of the program, which loads quickly, even when weighed down by multiple folders and RSS feeds, and the basic feature set remains intact: good junk mail filters, HTML support, multiple identities, and robust Web mail, POP, IMAP, and Microsoft Exchange server support. Security features include S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, and a built-in phishing detector. Add-ons, based on the same code as Firefox's add-on network, can enhance your security even further.
Joining such useful features as the back and forward e-mail browsing buttons and customizable tags in version 3.0 are a set of must-have features. The powerful search tool integrates results with desktop searches on Windows Vista and Windows 7, while tabs reinforce the connections between Web browsing and e-mail reading. In fact, the new search tool is so powerful that if you have a massive number of e-mails, you may want to set it to index them overnight lest it drain system resources from other programs. Gmail support especially has been revamped, so you now get an All Mail folder in Thunderbird, among other improvements. Mozilla's new Personas skins work in Thunderbird, while the Lightning add-on supplies the missing Microsoft Exchange-compatible calendar feature.
Flexible, powerful, and lightweight, Thunderbird 3 is an appropriate companion to Firefox in every way.
New search and tabs take flight in Thunderbird 3:Publisher's Description
From Mozilla:
Thunderbird makes e-mailing safer, faster, and easier with such features as intelligent spam filters, a built-in RSS reader, and quick search. Thunderbird was designed to prevent viruses and to stop junk mail. Thunderbird 3 includes tabbed e-mail, new search tools and indexing, "smart" folders, support for Firefox's Personas, a simplified setup wizard, and robust junk protections that include phishing and spam filters.
What's new in this version: Version 3.1.7 includes several fixes to improve performance, stability and security, see the Security Advisory, handling of large folder files stored locally, and corruption in local copy of IMAP mailboxes.

"ISPs Integrate Better With Mozilla Thunderbird"
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.7
Pros
The SSL/TLS connection security on port 465 is more supported. In fact this client works on Windows XP Home,WinXP Pro and Win7.
Cons
Children may find it's gray look and feel just plain. Eudora has more lively graphics.
Summary
Mozilla Thunderbird is more likely to work with your ISP's SMTP server, but youthful clients may favor Eudora for its colorful graphics.

"Fine layout but not a trouble free"
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.7
Pros
Like I said layout and options
Cons
More difficult that OE (can't use in 7),But what made me drop was inability to do simple rule message> block.Mozzila said I might have problem that required leaving and going into sub folder of T-Bird and do fix.
Summary
Good if your more tech savvy than me and have patience.Waaay more hassle than I want.Say what you want about Windows Outlook Express was good and easy but of course they had to screw that up and hear nothing but hassle with Windows live mail.

"Functional"
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.7
Pros
Free with a good search and spam filter as well as a simple user interface.
Cons
The inbox is constantly loading, importing contacts is difficult, the menus are cluttered, few add-ons are compatible with the latest version and it is hard to turn off the irritating tab feature.
Summary
I would give Thunderbird a miss, despite its good points and perhaps opt for Windows Live Mail or another email client.

"Thunderbird is the best email client for my uses"
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.7
Pros
If you run your own shop or just get email at home, don't even wonder if you should get it. For my uses, Thunderbird is tops.
Cons
I found no drawbacks. I have used too many email clients, including Outlook when I worked from a home office for a large corporation. Now what I want is a fast, simple email client that does everything and Thunderbird is that.
Summary
If you run your own shop or just get email at home, don't even wonder if you should get it. For my uses, Thunderbird is better than Windows 7 Live mail, web mail, the old Outlook Express--anything. I don't need a more powerful client since I no longer work on a massive network.

"Blocks Content on everything!"
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.7
Pros
Its Free but..........
Cons
Nothing like Windows Mail or Outlook Express. Dificult to import address book. Can't select address from address book to enter into To:. Have to type full address & then wait for it to learn the address. Can't import addres book from Windows Mail.
Summary
The more I use it, the more I dislike it. Shame on Microsoft for ever stopping Outlook Express and/or Windows Mail. Windows Live Stinks! And Mozilla is "NOT" the answer or solution.
Windows Mail or Outlook Express it is "NOT". Good luck using Migration Tool. It Blocks content on everything. doubling the time necessary to simply read email. It does not learn. It blocks same source over and over after adding as safe! Constantly fails to recognize password and locks getting mail from server! NOT WORTH THE DOWNLOAD! This was my first and last OPEN SOURCE DOWNLOADED PROGRAM! NO SUPPORT!
Updated on Jan 15, 2011
Updated on Jan 15, 2011CNet, this is the 3rd request and 3rd answer. Mozilla Thunderbird is difficult to set-up, migrate, import address book, and does nothing but block emails! Simply the worst email application/program I have ever tried to use. Not worth the download! AND NO SUPPORT! -
"good enough as far as email clients go"
Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.7
Pros
speed, stability and support of different type of servers
Cons
inability to auto find settings for quite a few servers and defaulting them to IMAP. also having to "click to agree" that a server is not using a secure connection.
Summary
good, solid client but server database needs to include settings for all or most servers. Live Mail 2011 does this better.
