Despite perceptions to the contrary, the desktop-based e-mail client is not dead. Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0 is a serious reaction to the prevalence of Web mail, so whether you're looking for a strong desktop client, an Outlook replacement, or a powerful tool for managing archives and Web mail offline, Thunderbird can scale to your needs.

Outlook users will notice the speed and responsiveness of the program, which loads quickly, even when weighed down by multiple folders and RSS feeds, and the basic feature set remains intact: good junk mail filters, HTML support, multiple identities, and robust Web mail, POP, IMAP, and Microsoft Exchange server support. Security features include S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, and a built-in phishing detector. Add-ons, based on the same code as Firefox's add-on network, can enhance your security even further.

Joining such useful features as the back and forward e-mail browsing buttons and customizable tags in version 3.0 are a set of must-have features. The powerful search tool integrates results with desktop searches on Windows Vista and Windows 7, while tabs reinforce the connections between Web browsing and e-mail reading. In fact, the new search tool is so powerful that if you have a massive number of e-mails, you may want to set it to index them overnight lest it drain system resources from other programs. Gmail support especially has been revamped, so you now get an All Mail folder in Thunderbird, among other improvements. Mozilla's new Personas skins work in Thunderbird, while the Lightning add-on supplies the missing Microsoft Exchange-compatible calendar feature.

Flexible, powerful, and lightweight, Thunderbird 3 is an appropriate companion to Firefox in every way.

"Good Alternative To Outlook"

October 20, 2010  |  By Woodsprite29

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.4

Pros

It pretty much does everything that you'd want to use Ms Outlook for, just a simpler interface. It does not do automatic calendar/meeting scheduling as well as Outlook, but then the filters work as opposed to Outlook's.

Cons

I have to manually check my mail...doesn't seem to do it automatically. If you like great GUI, this program ain't it.

Summary

Very good program for all that it offers.

October 16, 2010  |  By Jcaef

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.4

Pros

2 years ago, it was a very good program to use with the possibility to have many different emails addresses.
Today, it is so confusing that only expert may be able to use it. certainly not for me anymore

Cons

People like simple things and Thunderbird is certainly not working properly, messages are gone as soon as they arrive
It need a competent programmer to set it properly

Summary

2 years ago I loved Thunderbird, now it is the worst I have ever had, I switch to incredimail

"Incredibly confusing showing so many mailboxes."

October 09, 2010  |  By KeefyH

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.4

Pros

Competent e-mail client. I prefer them to web-based mail, more flexible and with more choices.for individuality.

Cons

Incredibly complex system. Not terribly reliable either. I tried sending a video clip and it just would not sen but I used Incredimai to send itl with no problem.. I much prefer Windows Mail but Virgin corrupted that so I can no longer send mail.

Summary

The amount of mail boxes is so confusing that it's taken me forever to make some sense of it all. I'm not so young any more and my eyesight is not what it was so it's difficult to read the very small script. I am an advanced user with man y years experience of computers in general. and I do not find this to be an intuitive program nor as versatile as Windows Mail.

Updated on Oct 9, 2010

Another big beef that I and other users have is that it's impossible to empty some folders, (Junk), so it stays on your hard drive using up space. With Windows Mail you just right click and choose from a menu but you cannot with Thunderbird and the only way is to delete them one at a time..

"You're not using it yet?"

October 09, 2010  |  By changstarr

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.4

Pros

So many options. A great place to look at all of your email accounts in one place. It's also easy to organize your schedule with "Lightning".

Cons

There is nothing I don't like about this program.

Summary

You'll have to download additional add-ons to access Yahoo! and Hotmail, It's also a bit of a hassle if you're not comfortable installing and troubleshooting, but there is a ton of info in helping you through it. It's worth it in the long run.
