Mozilla's Thunderbird comes into its own with version 2.0, offering features and innovations that take aim at both Web mail clients and industry standards like Microsoft's Outlook.
The program loads fast, even when weighed down by multiple folders and RSS feeds, and the basic feature set remains intact: good junk mail filters, HTML support, multiple identities, and POP, IMAP, and Microsoft Exchange server support. Security features include S/MMIE, digital signing, message encryption, and a built-in phishing detector. Interface tweaks maximize message viewing, an obvious necessity in an e-mail reader.
What makes this freeware e-mail client such a serious contender are the new features. Back and forward buttons, like you have in your Web browser, let you jump through messages in the order that you viewed them. Customizable tag names and colors make it a cinch to keep things organized, even across dozens of message folders. The folder pane is customizable. Gmail and Mac users will find configuration as simple as entering your e-mail address and password, with rumored support forthcoming for other Web-based providers. Search results can be saved, and Thunderbird has Firefox's extension capability, allowing for user-designed tweaks that greatly enhance the program.
Flexible, powerful, and lightweight, Thunderbird 2 is an appropriate companion app to Mozilla's Firefox in every way.

Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.9
Pros: Although I'm not much of a fan of FireFox, Mozilla really out-done themselves! I love this client because it has various plugins for it, works quickly, efficiently, and does what it says all for free! Can be installed easily.
Cons: Haven't found any yet, although it uses quite a bit of RAM (Ionly have 512MB =\ ) Still great and I recommend this if you also hate Outlook!

Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.9
"Welcome competitor to Bat and Outlook"
Pros: The program is nice and usable, customizable, and has (like Firefox) hundreds if not thousands of addons to use it. It is very secure and simple to use newly installed.
Cons: takes 20 megs of ram just running, that's a but much for me, windows mail is lighter. It also could use some UI work, a drag and drop for multiple items rather than holding ctrl and selecting each individual message would be nice.

Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.9
Pros: I am spammed near to death so have really appreciated the spam filtering feature and it does learn fast and well. It is secure and fast.
Cons: Very glitchy date reporting. Downloaded emails sometimes show dates for 2001, 2002, etc. More interesting are the ones that have dated sometime next month. It also irritates me by asking if I want to download email before going off line. When I see nothing has downloaded for a while, I press the "Get Mail" button and it tells me I am currently off line. These are not disastrous errors but it makes me think of switching to Outlook.
Also, no way to backup. No software out there for it.
