Formerly known as the e-mail component of the Mozilla Web browser, Thunderbird now exists as a standalone, full-featured client. The recently stripped-down code feels leaner and more focused than the original Mozilla component. In terms of features, the program is comparable to or exceeds other products in this space, boasting good junk-mail filters, compatibility with RSS feeds, HTML support, and multiple identities. Thunderbird handles both POP and IMAP accounts admirably, but we would like to see greater support for Microsoft's Exchange server. The program also boasts stellar security features such as S/MMIE, digital signing, message encryption, and a built-in phishing detector. Visually ahead of the game, Thunderbird's interface is a joy to use, and the application now lacks the sluggishness that plagued previous versions. We also like the layout options, which allow us to view our mail in various columned arrangements. Other little perks include message searching, saved-search folders, import tools, smart-address completion, labels, and return receipts. Though the lack of full Exchange support will keep this e-mail app on the sidelines in the corporate world, home users looking for an alternative to Outlook Express will absolutely find Thunderbird a high-flying choice.

"Ok, but far from "stellar.""

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.9

Pros

If you're used to Outlook Express, you will get used to Thunderbird quickly. It looks similar, and it imported all of my Outlook Express messages, message organizational structure, and address book, without a single glitch. Many of the same tools are available as in Outlook Express.

Cons

Product does not appear to be completely stable. Its operation is not as predictable as it needs to be for serious users. Message formatting options are not as complete as Outlook Express's. Sometimes messages are formatted with lines that are too long, or paragraph spaces that are too large. Sometimes spaces entered with the spacebar do not show up on the screen, so you add an additional space, which shows up as two spaces in the recipient's message. There is no precise control over text size (no font size numbers), as there is in Outlook Express. If you are used to Outlook Express, and are happy with the way it works, I'd recommend sticking with it. It is a more refined program. Basically, Thunderbird is not ready for prime-time, unless you are a casual, informal user who doesn't have to worry about always appearing professional in your correspondence.

"Great at first, but was dead within hours"

March 10, 2007  |  By kenl100

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.9

Pros

Easily configured rules, great interface, fast, "themable", highly configurable.

Cons

After hours of setting up accounts and defining rules, I was dead in the water on the first day due to the dreaded "This folder is being processe. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages" error that was displayed when I attempted to retrieve mail. I tried all of the fixes and none worked. There doesn't seem to be a solid explanation for this and you need to start from scratch in some instances- not a good solution considering this happened on day 1. Please research this before downloading the program and making it your primary mail client. I though I found a suitable replacement for Outlook but am back to square one due to this fatal flaw.

"Best email client, and free to boot"

March 02, 2007  |  By the_jordan

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.9

Pros

I use Thunderbird to manage 10 different email accounts that handle a lot of email and I've experienced almost no problems wince I've been using the program. I used to use Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2003, but after regular crashes lost tons of email repeatedly (grr), I made the switch and haven't looked back.

Other great things about Thunderbird: it's free and there are a lot of great plug ins available to do just about anything you could need.

Older versions seemed a little unstable, but the program keeps getting better and better (1.0.5.10 is out now).

"TRULY AN ENSIGN TO THE NATIONS !"

March 01, 2007  |  By KeysVIP

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.9

Pros

SOLID

RELIABLE

BEST EVER SUPPORT FORUMS (second only to sister application Firefox)

NO CONFUSING LAYOUT

GREAT ANTI SPAM (Can link with SpamAssasin & SpamPal, so far)

GREAT THEMES

HUNDREDS OF EXTENSIONS (Plugins) OF WHICH MOST POPULAR ONES ARE BUILT IN LATER VERSIONS of THUNDERBIRD.

GREAT PLUGINS I WOULD LIKE TO SEE INCLUDED IN NEXT VERSION ARE:-

WEBMAIL > Adds Automatic Webmail account setup for Hotmail, Gmail, YahooMail, LycosMail, AOLmail, Mail.com mail, LiberoMail, MSNmail.

EDIT AS NEW > Allows a sent or received email to edited and sent as new.

OKOPIPI > Allows you to send received spam to places like SpamAssasin, and several reporting agencies at once.

I have been using Thunderbird for ten years, in effect, as I used the older Netscape/Mozilla EMail, using 11 accounts, which have now become 4 accounts. All work flawlessly on Thunderbird, athough I need the Webmail plugin for my Hotmail, but AOL is already supported without a plugin needed.

Keep up the brilliant work.

Cons

Currently, Compacting folders is manual. I look forward to some automation in later versions. I also look forward to Mozilla's Calander Plugin to reach a higher level of developement.

"what do you mean you did't get my email"

January 21, 2007  |  By greggie123

 |  Version: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.9

Pros

I will not use outlook and have used various e-mail programs in order not to do so. I really like the idea of open source coding and the price is right on target.

Cons

I used it for some time and all of sudden it went bonkers on me and would not send out any email. I could still receive but unable to send. It even acted like it did but did not. I somehow got a virus just prior to this happening and whether this had an impact on the program or not is debatable. I tried to correct the problem by uninstalling the program and reinstalling but to no avail. I searched the message boards and found similar problems posted with no solutions suggested.
