Publisher's description of Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0

From mozilla.org:

Thunderbird makes e-mailing safer, faster, and easier than ever before with the industry's best implementations of features such as intelligent spam filters, a built-in RSS reader, and quick search.

Thunderbird gives you a faster, safer, and more productive e-mail experience. We designed Thunderbird to prevent viruses and to stop junk mail so you can get back to reading your mail. Read on to find out more about the reasons why you should use Thunderbird as your mail client and RSS reader.

Thunderbird provides the most effective tools for detecting junk mail. Our tools analyze your e-mail and identify those that are most likely to be junk. You can automatically have your junk mail deleted or you can put it in a folder you specify, just in case you like reading junk mail.

View your e-mail the way you want it. Access your e-mail with Thunderbird's new three-column view. Customize your toolbar, change its look with themes, and use Mail Views to quickly sort through your e-mail.

Thunderbird provides enterprise and government-grade security features such as S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, and support for certificates and security devices.

Thunderbird gives you IMAP/POP support, a built-in RSS reader, support for HTML mail, powerful quick search, saved-search folders, advanced message filtering, message grouping, labels, return receipts, smart address book LDAP address completion, import tools, and the ability to manage multiple e-mail and newsgroup accounts.

Thunderbird lets you add additional features as you need them through extensions. Extensions are a powerful tool to help you build a mail client that meets your specific needs.

  • "What's the word? Thunderbird!"
  • Version reviewed: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0
Formerly known as the e-mail component of the Mozilla Web browser, Thunderbird now exists as a stand-alone, full-featured client. The recently stripped-down code feels leaner and more focused than the original Mozilla component. In terms of features, the program is comparable to or exceeds other products in this space, boasting good junk-mail filters, compatibility with RSS feeds, HTML support, and multiple identities. Thunderbird also handles both POP and IMAP accounts admirably. The program also boasts stellar security features such as S/MIME, digital signing, and message encryption. Visually ahead of the game, Thunderbird's interface is a joy to use, and the application now lacks the sluggishness that plagued pervious versions. We also like the layout options, which allow us to view our mail in various columned arrangements. Other little perks include message searching, saved-search folders, import tools, smart-address completion, labels, and return receipts. Mac users looking for an alternative to Apple's e-mail client will absolutely find Thunderbird a high-flying choice.

"It's a great client but missing some strange things."

by kylebellamy on March 21, 2005

Pros: Easy to use and full of features with a lot of add ons that are being written everyday. Spam stoppage is decent but some still gets through

Cons: A glaring hole in the software is that there is no ability to Auto Forward emails to another account. For instance, I have an email account for my Blackberry Phone and I want to have emails that come in from people in my address book to be sent to my phone address. Not possible and the official word is this is not a part of Thunderbird but perhaps I should write and extension for it... lol

"Good, but lacking in innovation with uninteresting features."

by mrfrog on March 7, 2005

Pros: Good junk avoidance, decent layout, better than average customizability.

Cons: No reasons to switch from Mail.app. What's so different? RSS reader? That's what my browser is for. I like my mail client to get my email, filter out spam, display HTML occasionally, and look pretty. Mail.app does all that just as well or better than Thunderbird. And I can't import from Address Book or Mail, and if I could with a third party extension, so what? Nothing is new with this product, down to the junk-filtering system which mimics Apple's. A disappointment considering the superiority Firefox has over Safari. Thunderbird is ho-hum at best.

    "perfect, but useless..."

Summary: wow, what an application... just amazing... but unfortunately there is no way to use apple's adressbook (for email-adresses) as you can in apple's mail.
and - regarding the forums - there won't be any solution for this problem in the near fut... read more >>

"Good app, but freezes regularly on Mac OSX 10.5.6"

    by Justin_Swan_517 on April 6, 2009

Pros: - Easy to use, works pretty much the same as most mail applications.
    - Compatible with Mac and Windows.
    - Simple to transfer mail settings and folders from other mail applications to thunderbird.

Cons: - Freezes randomly when in the middle of writing emails. Can't do anything in the application til it resumes from freezing/hanging.
    - Forward option attaches the entire email you wish to forward as an attachment file.

Summary: If this application didn't freeze randomly I would continue to use it, but its very frustrating when it freezes at random in the middle of writing a long email or loading a lengthy email into the preview window. This problem really needs fixing. The... read more >>
