"it is great for movies and other stuff plus warcraft"

December 25, 2010  |  By purplemaizenjm

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 8

folders, warcraft, files, movies, anything you like it is there it is a great browser but, it has its faults.

it can't play flash games it does not have a loading bar on the bottom of the page, It is trying to act like Safari. every time I go to pogo to try to play a game I get a freeze frame. I am told there is No Java in Browser from Pogo.

If I can't play a game from pogo or any other game area even where I test at different sites. why bother change my browser to the beta 4. if they can't fix it. I need the the loading bar on the bottom of the page. I have mention this to them time and time again and they have not done it. They don't care about Macs

"Mozilla has abandoned the PPC . . ."

December 23, 2010  |  By SandFarmer

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 8

Nothing. Since I can not run it on my trusty workhorse (that will be upgraded in Q1 and left in service) but it's what I and millions are using now.

Mozilla doesn't think PPC's are worthy of their product.

And cnet can't get their specs accurate.

I have been using FF for what seems forever. And now that they don't think the PPC platform is worthy, I guess that it's on to one of many other browsers. AND I have sent out a memo to my IT departments, that we, are no longer installing nor supporting FF and Thunderbird on any platform. Even after the first of the year and beyond for those that will be getting new Intel machines. Which will be everyone I my and several other companies I run.

Some people in this world will not be as fortunate to be able to upgrade, do to many reasons and when PPC's that are out there are working just fine and there is no reason for some to do so, or it's not in the budget, this makes no sense. To say the least, I am very disappointed in the Mozilla organization and this makes using M$ Office Mail over Thunderbird and Chrome easier to justify.

Thanks, Mozilla. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I have stopped all donations from my and any other company I run/deal with to your organization.

Not much to say

Despite the published specs, it will not allow me to install this on a PPC Mac.

"Fast, solid, highly extensible!"

December 23, 2010  |  By friedchikkin

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 4 beta 8

This beta (8) is noticeably faster than beta7- I found that amazing. It's been giving me solid performance since I began using it when they put it on their ftp server back on the 14th (Dec. '10).

Some Add-ons don't work, they need to be updated. Doesn't seem to play nice with some MIME settings to allow Quicktime/WMV Flip4Mac plug-ins to play video in the browser- I set it to open in VLC.

Besides the very few, aforementioned caveats, Firefox 4.0 beta 8 is a very solid performer- noticeably faster than even the beta 7 release in rendering sites with or without scripts on them- some sites almost pop on the page as if I opened a local file! Some Add-ons work easily by disabling compatibility Plug-in detection, authors specify what version Firefox works with their Add-on and sometimes that does coalesce with Mozilla's latest beta or nightly build.

I've yet to use the Firefox Sync feature but I can only envision using it if Firefox was available for more mobile platforms like BlackBerry- which its not. Otherwise I backup my bookmarks regularly and remember my plethora of logins, believe it or not. I don't see utility in Firefox Sync.

Firefox offers great security features as well as security customization [options].

Necessary Add-Ons; AdBlock Plus and NoScript! Can you imagine most of your web experience not seeing ads? I almost take it for granted at this point... and NoSCript allows me to control what sites can load their scripts on any given page I'm viewing- this extends to any third-party referenced site. For example, on this page, I have facebook blocked and marked as an untrusted site... but I block all connections to facebook through my router as well! lol There are so many sites that have access to your data by proxy it's nice to feel I've a little extra control.

It's free. Sure there hasn't been a boxed, retail browser since Netscape Navigator but I still can't complain about a free browser. Safari's a great browser, but it doesn't have the Add-Ons available to the Firefox community, especially for killing ads. For those whom think ads should be there to help bring revenue to the sites that especially provide free, useful service; I agree. But I never click those ads, I feel my life is inundated with thousands of ads a day and if I can get rid of a few from my life I will- they annoy me. Period.

I've been playing around with grouped tabs. It works very well and has nice keyboard shortcuts- I don't personally have that much crap open at once, but I can imagine facebook addicts will love the feature.

It's still only scoring a 97 on that Acid3 test... but who cares? I've yet to encounter a site that renders incorrectly with Firefox 4 so cry me a river...
