Editors' Review

+

Read CNET senior editor Rob Vamosi's extended review of Firefox 3.

No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox 3 is full-featured, lightning fast, and an able Internet Explorer foe. Previous versions have seen Mozilla's approach to features such as tabbed browsing and extensions become extremely popular. Even though Firefox 3 lacks a killer feature, it offers significant improvements not to be missed.

Version 3 introduces a multitude of safety and usability features. The location bar drop-down menu now includes URLs from both your browsing history and your bookmarks. A new Add-Ons manager includes a built-in plug-in search engine, saving you the previous trip to the Mozilla Web site. Single-click the star icon on the right of the location bar to bookmark the current page, or double-click on it to simultaneously add and edit the bookmark entry. You can tag bookmarks, too. Other impressive new features include password confirmation before adding it to the saved passwords list, the ability to pause and resume downloads, and merged forward and backward history lists.

Firefox 3 now runs faster and, according to Mozilla, is less susceptible to hacks and other vulnerabilities. The browser now warns your system's antivirus program when you download a file, and anti-malware and anti-phishing utilities now throw up a warning page before allowing Firefox to load risky sites. The favicon reveals Web sites' ownership details and displays the security level of your connection to that site.

Developers will appreciate that Firefox 3's new graphics and text rendering code provide rendering improvements in CSS and SVG as well as improved display of fonts and complex scripts. Firefox 3--still open-source, as ever--is a browser that all users should consider making their default Web-surfing tool.

"Feature rich and unreliable as all get out"

February 17, 2009  |  By hlslaughter

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5

Pros

Plugins make firefox the most feature rich browser in existence. Highly customizable with extremely useful plugins.

Cons

Firefox crashes more often than all other applications on my laptop put together. I can count on it crashing regularly.
Crashes have plagued firefox and its predecessors. I would be ecstatic if v4 were simply to focus on NOT CRASHING.

Summary

It's so feature rich, that you essentially have to use it. There's just no other browser that compares. Chrome is faster and more stable, Opera has it's niche features and is also rather fast, Safari, meh, an also-ran, IE is... er... there. But altogether, nothing competes with Firefox.

This would be a 5 star app if it didn't crash so regularly.

"Excellent Browser - Superior to all others"

February 02, 2009  |  By Drainy

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5

Pros

Tabbed browsing - plenty of selection of add ons and skins - useful search bar - has an almost ergonomic feel to the interface, feels natural to use

Cons

Can be a memory monster at time but certainly not a show stopper by any means.

Summary

Firefox has grown alot in the past few years and this version is the peak so far of the project, It includes tabbed browsing, a built in google seach bar (or whatever search bar you can find to import into it) The product is reliable and stable, especially under heavy load (I have used it while developing web sites and with many tabs open, editors running in the background and everything has functioned perfectly. Worth an upgrade if you are using opera or IE.

"crashes and uses way too much cpu"

January 26, 2009  |  By jjmmhh

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5

Pros

looks good

Cons

Takes up too much cpu and forces me to have to close it and start over to clear the cpu. Crashes alot and has to restart. Makes me wish I'd have kept version 2.12.

Summary

I am disappointed in all current web browsers right now. Opera not working on all web sites, Firefox hogging the memory, Google running itself at startup for autoupdates, Safari for not allowing window users to customize it, and IE for continually being mediocre.

"***** five star *****"

January 25, 2009  |  By i_sam

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5

Pros

Awesome browser, way better than IE6. The tool bar buttons to get to your favorite site are great. The save feature is nice when Windows crashes. It's nice to be able to save pages and then come back to them after restarting FF.

Cons

I had a few problems with downloading applications. FF would only download part of a program, and then stop.

Summary

Great browser, the built in spell checker, etc are hecka nice.

"Firefox is my favorite but something went wrong"

January 25, 2009  |  By darasue

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5

Pros

Prior to this version, Firefox rarely crashed and internet surfing was enjoyable and quick

Cons

This version repeatedly crashes, does not completely close out and hogs up CPU memory, requiring me to "end task" in the task manager.

Summary

I will continue to recommend Firefox as an excellent browser, but the software gurus need to come up with a badly-needed update to fix the 3.0.5. version nightmare.

"Horrible!!!"

January 22, 2009  |  By Eunix

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5

Pros

nothing that I know of....

Cons

A lot!!! I installed it (3.0.5 version) ran it and I can't even browse any page. Funny thing is, I can browse in IE without configuring anything. I thought IE was terrible until I used this one, totally sucks. Versions 3.0.1 and 3.0.3 are much better

Summary

waste of time... I won't even bother trying beyond the 3.0.3 version... too much hype yet totally sucks... IDK if it's proxy-related or a firewall thing but I used different setups and nothing worked for me...

"Better than IE7 but not perfect by any means"

January 19, 2009  |  By mtnmama33

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.5

Pros

The add-ons to enhance usability are awesome. After a crash, it is possible to resume the same configuration that was present when the crash happened, not necessary to re-locate and re-open the sites being worked on.

Cons

Too many add-ons are available; descriptions not detailed enough to make choices easy. Product crashes easily, for no apparent reason. Despite using add-ons claiming to make switching between tabs easy, could never get [Ctrl-tab] or F3 to work.

Summary

I use this as my default browser in lieu of IE7 for routine browsing, BUT I use Maxthon when I need fast, easy tab-switching. Overall, I think Firefox is "pretty good" but I think it crashes far too often.
