Editors' Review

Read CNET senior editor Rob Vamosi's extended review of Firefox 3.

No longer a fledgling upstart, Firefox 3 is full-featured, lightning fast, and an able Internet Explorer foe. Previous versions have seen Mozilla's approach to features such as tabbed browsing and extensions become extremely popular. Even though Firefox 3 lacks a killer feature, it offers significant improvements not to be missed.

Version 3 introduces a multitude of safety and usability features. The location bar drop-down menu now includes URLs from both your browsing history and your bookmarks. A new Add-Ons manager includes a built-in plug-in search engine, saving you the previous trip to the Mozilla Web site. Single-click the star icon on the right of the location bar to bookmark the current page, or double-click on it to simultaneously add and edit the bookmark entry. You can tag bookmarks, too. Other impressive new features include password confirmation before adding it to the saved passwords list, the ability to pause and resume downloads, and merged forward and backward history lists.

Firefox 3 now runs faster and, according to Mozilla, is less susceptible to hacks and other vulnerabilities. The browser now warns your system's antivirus program when you download a file, and anti-malware and anti-phishing utilities now throw up a warning page before allowing Firefox to load risky sites. The favicon reveals Web sites' ownership details and displays the security level of your connection to that site.

Developers will appreciate that Firefox 3's new graphics and text rendering code provide rendering improvements in CSS and SVG as well as improved display of fonts and complex scripts. Firefox 3--still open-source, as ever--is a browser that all users should consider making their default Web-surfing tool.

"NEW CODE DANGEROUS IN 32-bit AND 64-bit ENVIRONMENTS."

December 19, 2008  |  By royalpraetorian

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4

Pros

I loved the older versions of Firefox and relied on them for 90% of my browsing. (2.0.0.18).

Cons

New version 2.0.0.19 brought down XP filesystem with no stable rollback option. 64-bit ver 3.01 minefield version crashed my Vista 64-bit operating system.

Summary

The new 3.04 version is incompatable with Vista 64-bit from what I hear (is 32-bit). The 2.0.0.19 version had an self-interrupted auto-install with what was open in the browser window. The XP filesystem crashed to an unrecoverable state. It seems Mozilla is using low-level writes recently that are causing serious system crashes that sometimes confuse the BIOS on my ASUS P5Q Deluxe system.

"Firefox Problem"

December 18, 2008  |  By lowellfg

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4

Pros

I love the new interface and the ease of using it.

Cons

With this version 3.04, it just continouly crashes. I don't if the softwas has a problem. I hope they fix it real soon.

Summary

I love using firefox, but it just keeps crashing. I hope Mozilla fixes the problen soon, because I hate IE. I don't know how to save a web site in IE. I hated to give it one star, but with the issues at hand right now, that is all I can give.

"Fast, secure, and overall pretty good"

December 18, 2008  |  By Randomweirdo

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4

Pros

It is well known as the worlds fastest, most secure web browser with an inbuilt virus scanner for downloads, easily customisable, almost never crashes, automatically deletes history, and altogether the best browser around.

Cons

None whatsoever, although the claim of being the fastest is barely noticeable.

"Not as good as previous version (3.0.3)"

December 16, 2008  |  By 8well

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4

Pros

Speed, excellent security (they don't just say that) , great tabbed browsing, design, ability to completely loose all history when browser is closed. Have had versions of Firefox for 2 years. Initially installed it on a computer with issues.Big help!

Cons

Immediately after updating from version 3.0.3 (virtually flawless performance) to 3.0.4, some page loading lagged, or "page not found" where it didn't occur before. Tried complete uninstall and reinstall, helped a little.

Summary

My solution (for now) is Mozilla Firefox Portable 3.0.3, available here on download.com (only place I could find any 3.0.3). It works like my good old standard 3.0.3, only requires a little modification. I decribe what I did in a Mozilla Firefox Portable 3.0.3 review called "Da Best". There are probably better ways to do it, though this way functions great for my use.

"better than explorer but lots of issues"

December 14, 2008  |  By bdhouck

 |  Version: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4

Pros

i've used mozilla for as long as i can remember and it worked perfect w/ windows xp, easy to use, easy to manuver, fun to customize.

Cons

since i got a new computer and i have vista, mozilla crashes, alot. i dont think i can use my computer w/ out it crashing at least once a day, usually more.

Summary

i tried google chrome, it's very basic and boring, internet explorer freezes non- stop when i use it, so i use mozilla out of not having any other choice. i am however on the look out often for a new browser so i can get rid of mozilla as well.
