Mozilla Firefox for Mac

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on December 07, 2008

Read CNET senior editor Rob Vamosi's extended review of Firefox 2, or watch a video tour of the new features.

Though it's difficult to unseat Safari as the preferred browser of Mac users, Mozilla Firefox garners attention through its solid design and extra features, making it a worthy alternative. Even though Internet Explorer dominates the Web browser market, you might wonder why if you spend some time with Mozilla Firefox. This light and nimble Web wonder brought tabbed browsing into the mainstream (IE7 recently jumped on the bandwagon) and offers countless ways to customize it through extensions and themes. Drag-and-drop tabs with individual close buttons help keep your content organized the way you like, and you can further streamline your browsing through the use of extensive hot keys. You'll find all of the regular options and features required for surfing the Web in the default setup, but the groundbreaking features come with the thousands of third-party extensions. Likewise, if you don't like the look of the default interface, there are hundreds of slick themes to use, though many weren't updated for version 2 at its release.

Firefox is the perfect browser for those involved with Web design and coding. A JavaScript debugger comes standard, and Firefox displays the page-source code in a new window, using indents and color-coded tags similar to an HTML editor. The built-in pop-up blocker works great for most sites, and new antiphishing protections and enhanced security for extensions are in the version 2 release. Anyone looking for a full-featured browser with seemingly endless ways to customize should download this powerhouse.

    "Problems with Vista Home P."

    December 5, 2007  |   By mriverdance

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11

    Pros

I was utilizing Fire Fox 2.0.0.9 Then update 10 came and I no longer had access to the internet via Fire Fox. So I went to Morzilla's website for help, at the message boards. The staff aren't employees they are just trying to help. I was told to turn off Windows Defender, and my virus protection uninstall the prog.. Then reinstall .10. with Defender and virus off. Fire Fox started just no connection. Spent several hours on different days going through various options. #11 has been released, was informed to go through the same process. Started up, just no connection. I'm going to the Morzilla web site, via Internet Exployer. Hmmm. I had a copy of version .01 on my XP computer. Didn't work on Vista. I still have a connection problem. My issue, is Frie Fox was running fine, with my security programs all on, I'm being informed to now start turning stuff on and cleaning the system. I did some stuff, but if it was their update that caused a problem, then one of the updates should fix it, or they should have a link to another program to clean out what ever their update created thats causing the problem.

On XP this program rocks! But on Vista, beware. I'm now utilizing strickly WIE-7. I'm hoping they get a fix soon. If I start getting used to using WIE-7 I might just find I prefer its dependability.

"OK, but don't see any improvements"

    December 5, 2007  |   By Souleros

    Version: Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.11

    Pros

Seems to work ok, liked the warning before closing out tabs, which Safari now finally added, too.

    Cons

Sometimes it slows way down, I try clearing private data, cache, etc, but if left open very long, it will stall, slow, etc.....
