Even though Internet Explorer dominates the Web browser market, you might wonder why if you spend some time with Mozilla Firefox. This light and nimble Web wonder brought tabbed browsing into the mainstream (IE7 recently jumped on the bandwagon) and offers countless ways to customize it through extensions and themes. Drag-and-drop tabs with individual close buttons help keep your content organized the way you like, and you can further streamline your browsing through the use of extensive hot keys. You'll find all of the regular options and features required for surfing the Web in the default setup, but the groundbreaking features come with the thousands of third-party extensions. Likewise, if you don't like the look of the default interface, there are hundreds of slick themes to use, though many weren't updated for version 2 at its release.

Firefox is the perfect browser for those involved with Web design and coding. A JavaScript debugger comes standard, and Firefox displays the page-source code in a new window, using indents and color-coded tags similar to an HTML editor. The built-in pop-up blocker works great for most sites, and new antiphishing protections and enhanced security for extensions are in the version 2 release. Anyone looking for a full-featured browser with seemingly endless ways to customize should download this powerhouse.

"Extensions make Firefox a better browser... much better!"

by wyzardofodd on March 21, 2007

Pros: Since I'm a HUGE advocate of Firefox extensions and have what I consider to be a superior set of add-ons, I have decided that instead of writing the same old same old on the browser's virtues I would simply list those I use.... all 61 of them. They make my browsing experience infinitely more enjoyable!

Ardvark, Adblock Filterset.G Updater, Adblock Plus, Add Bookmark Here 2, Aging Tabs, All-in-One Gestures, All-in-One Sidebar, Autohide, Bettersearch, Clean and Close, Clear URL Button, Clipmarks, CoLT, Cooliris Previews, Copy Plain Text, Copy URL +, Cute Menus Crystal SVG, DeskCut, DownThemAll, DragNDrop Toolbars, DragToScroll, Dynamic Web, FEBE, Flat Bookmark Editing, Google Tabs, History Submenus, IE Tab, Image Zoom, Linkification, Locate in Bookmark Folder, Menu Editor, Morning Coffee,Mr Tech Local Install, No Squint, NoScript, Openbook, Picsearch Highlight, Print/Print Preview, Quickzoom, Read Easily, Remove it Permanently, Resizeable Textarea, Save Image in Folder, Save Link in Folder, Scrapbook, Search Synchronizer, Searchbar Autosizer, Searchbox Sync, Send Tab URLs, ShowIP, Smoothwheel, Stop-or-Reload Button, StumbleUpon, Tab History, Tab mix Plus, Translator, Update Bookmark, Uppity, Web Search Pro, Wizz RSS News Reader, Yahoo! Mail Notifier

If some of these extensions look new to you and peak your curiosity then perhaps you might consider giving them a try. In the hope of broadening the scope of the CNET reviews on Firefox it would be nice to hear about what extensions others are using. An interesting dialogue might develop.

Cons: Tons of extensions greatly slow Firefox's loading time.

    "Fantastic Firefox"

by Stefan. on March 21, 2007

Pros: Firefox is extremely customizable (extensions and skins) and safe. I never have to worry about my PC being hurt by Firefox (as opposed to IE). Firefox is an excellent alternative to IE.

"The best browser continues it's reign!"

    by pentium4forever on May 8, 2007

Pros: I love the tabbed browsing, the phishing filter is effective, and will all the extensions available--it beats the competition hands down.

Cons: This is minor, I want something that says read mail in FF, there was an extension for it but it is not yet compatible with the latest FF.
