CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: CNET Staff

The final release of Mozilla Firefox offers enough features to make you rethink Internet Explorer. You can easily create toolbars by dragging and dropping icons. Live Bookmarks turn RSS feeds into something that acts like a bookmarks folder. You can type Google search queries right into the address bar or use the built-in search box. The program displays the page source in a new window, using indents and color-coded tags like an HTML editor. You can view your bookmarks or history in the Sidebar area, which lets you quickly revisit your favorite sites. Though the browser hides its advanced settings, you can still build modules using XML, CSS, JavaScript, and even C . The program includes such tools as a JavaScript debugger and a DOM viewer.

At 55MB for 25 windows, the browser uses fewer resources than Internet Explorer but more than Opera. The built-in pop-up blocker works better than Opera's, IE's, and those of most paid standalone utilities. However, the download manager is still underdeveloped. Though the final release version vastly improves stability, we noticed occasional reluctance to maximize in response to Alt Tab commands. People who want more security than IE provides should look at Mozilla Firefox.

    "Flawless"

    by pentium4forever on October 21, 2005

Pros: Pop-up blocker included, good cookies controls (allow, block, session cookies), tabbed browsing, and there's a lot of talk of it not working with some sites, primarily banking websites. My bank it works with! I'm ready to say Firefox will work with 95% of websites. Firefox also has tons, and I mean tons of extensions to make the browsing experience faster, easier, and simply better than IE!

Cons: None that I can really think of. They should include some of the handy extensions that are add-ons, into the browser by default, integrate them without requiring user to download them separately. Paste & Go, and the show/hide images without a doubt should be included.

"If you want to be safe, use FIREFOX"

by shengguan on November 18, 2005

Pros: This browser although simple but has many hidden features that protect you from spyware intrusions. Ever since i started using firefox, pop-ups have disappeared - when i think about pop-ups now, i don't remember seeing them for a long time. Never a unknown software found installed without me knowing it because Firefox blocks activeX from running which is what spyware companies are using to install spywares on computers. Trust me, if you want to stay safe, use Firefox

    Cons: needs better interface customization

"Why are there still people using IE?"

    by Mr_Cynical on November 5, 2005

Pros: The M$-vs-OSS argument is fairly redundant here since both Firefox and IE are free, so I'll concentrate on the technical qualities. It loads pages about twice as fast as IE for a start, and is fully compatible with all web technologies (IE still doesn't fully support Cascading Style Sheets, which is used on just about every website around, and despite it having been a web standard for 10 years+). It is generally less vulnerable to virii and spyware than IE, and any security flaws that do appear generally have a fix available within TWELVE HOURS [instead of 1 week+ for IE].

Firefox is also uniquely extendable - with 766 [at the time of writing] different extensions (which require a two-click install via addons.mozilla.org) as compared to IE having the Google Toolbar and CoolWebSearch. The user interface is just as moddable as the program itself, and there are currently 127 different themes available (and that's only the ones listed on the official site) - whereas with IE you are well and truly stuck with what M$ tells you to like.

Overall, its just a much BETTER browser than Internet Explorer (or Opera for that matter, which has a less than 1% market share and I have therefore ignored) - and the open source philosophy allows a bunch of programmers with too much time on their hands to write mods and skins that let you tailor it to your specific needs. What are you waiting for?

Cons: The livemarks feature is nothing brilliant - although its better than the complete lack of RSS support in IE - and you can always use the Feedview extension to turn IE into a full-fledged RSS reader. Some websites will offer reduced or no service to non-IE users (possibly violating the Disability Discrimination Act for UK sites), however again this can be fixed with a simple extension (Useragent Switcher ) which makes Firefox pretend to be IE to trick these sites.
