The best utilities do one thing and do it incredibly well. Morpheus is a perfect example of this principle. The amazingly simple tool takes two images and creates a morphing transition between them. Though the morphing effect has been popular for years, it's never been this easy to create. Once the images are imported, a markup tool is used to flag similar areas between the two images. After creating enough common areas, the software goes to work, rendering the animation into one of several formats, including animated GIF, full-screen AVI, and even Macromedia Flash. On the downside, the help system could use a bit of streamlining, and the demo version only allows for four rendered files. However, considering the small demo size and learning curve, this is a great diversion for anyone interested in creating unique special effects.

Morpheus is a free graphics tool that lets you morph from one image to another. Two versions of the program are included; there is one for beginners and another for advanced users. Both versions support clean-looking interfaces and can open many popular types of images. You can save your morphs as a sequence of BMP files or as an uncompressed AVI file. You can load any two pictures into the program's viewer boxes and then drag and drop dots onto each image, creating the final morph. The more dots you place on the pictures, the smoother your end results will be.

Version 1.70 added a new keyframe feature and the ability to alter the dot style to something other then a huge square. Version 1.75 adds the ability to render uncompressed animated GIFs. In addition, the included FreeImage library has been upgraded to version 2.3.1, and the Visual Basic 6.0 files are now based on the SP5 release.
