Miranda IM lacks the slick design of most IM programs, but makes up for it by supporting most IM programs in one fully customizable package. It's easy to add your various IM accounts--including AIM, Yahoo, ICQ and MSN--and you'll have the same icons and status messages for each program. You can even manage the personal information for all your accounts from one central control panel.
Miranda IM's plain, gray instant-messaging window offers just the basics for typing and viewing messages; you won't find the text formatting options, emoticons, or links that a program like Yahoo Messenger offers. You will find numerous options to customize how chat or IM windows behave, including a handy option to have messages from a specific person always appear in the same location on your screen. You also can assign hot keys for a few actions like opening the program or reading a message.
Miranda IM is offered as freeware. You'll give up some of the unique features of your IM programs, but Miranda IM allows you to conveniently monitor and manage many of your chat and messaging programs in one place.

Version: Miranda IM (Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista) 0.7.5
Pros: Miranda IM is free of buzzes, kisses, backgrounds and other stuff that are disturbing in a business environment. It is plain and gray and dull, which is positive. Plus it does not understand most executable virus laden instructions that are becoming commonplace in messages. It has saved me from MSN viruses a couple of times.
After adding the Lotus Sametime support plugin it fulfills all my IM communication requirements in Yahoo/MSN/AIM/Googletalk and Lotus Notes. And there's more if I join more networks. Hey it even does Skype IM (with some limitations).
Super easy to install on numerous computer-change occasions and upgrades. I cannot understand why some people have trouble doing this.
Cons: The only clunky thing is to add support for Googletalk, however well documented at Google it did not pose a problem--just clunky. But the app is only at version 0 point something. And before adding an emoticon plugin I will go on receiving mysterious character strings that the sender sees as a yellow thing with a cigar and a cap which I don't want to know about anyway.
