Instead of the routine e-mail client look and feel, this nice-looking RSS reader presents a fresh approach and an element of social networking, with only a few drawbacks.
After a very slow install, Mindity launches a well-designed, vertical window that lists headlines from user-defined news sources. Clicking a link opens a pop-up window with the story synopsis. From the pop-up window, we were able to launch a browser window with the entire story. The pop-up synopsis seems like a wasted step, and we didn't like that we had to close the pop-up manually after opening a browser window.
Mindity offers a bit of social networking as well, by allowing users to vote for stories and mark them as Hot Feeds--other Mindity users are alerted to the rankings. You also can connect with other Mindity users to form a network of Friends and share comments on stories.
These features all worked well during our tests. This free tool offers a nice, new face to the ever-growing world of newsreaders. Our only dings against it are the slow install time and the seemingly unnecessary story synopsis window.
