MidiPiano is free software for playing and producing MIDI music files, with the addition of a virtual piano that can be played with your keyboard or cursor.
The interface for MidiPiano is okay, but not fantastic. The buttons are simple and easy to understand, but almost too simple and could be improved upon for functionality. You can play previously saved MIDI files or make your own. Creating MIDI music with this software consists of recording while you play the virtual piano and then editing to cut or insert notes. You can also adjust the octave, speed, and volume.
The virtual piano takes some getting used to. Our testing went slowly since using a computer keyboard as a piano was new to us and we had to remember which key went to what. Just clicking on the virtual piano keys is bothersome, because it's slow and we found ourselves accidentally clicking on the wrong keys. Thankfully, the editing features allow you to delete those mistakes and move the notes closer together for a more cohesive sound.
There weren't any big installation problems, but you have to read through the installation process to make sure you don't download a toolbar along with it. Also, MidiPiano does not uninstall cleanly. The program worked well, though, and didn't cause any problems. We recommend this if you know way around a computer, but you don't have to be an advanced user.

I can get a fairly accurate 440.

The lowest two octaves do not even approach being on pitch, not even relative to each other. E2 is Eb, not E. Octave 1 is all over the place.
There is no easy way to play this using the computer keyboard. The naturals play just by moving from key-to-key along the rows of the computer keyboard, but if there is a way to play the black keys, it's not indicated. I couldn't find anything in the Help file other than to choose a different layout. Help file was anything but helpful.Summary
I don't see how one could write or play music on this. It is clumsy for even the very limited application for which I will use it: getting pitches and practicing lines in a singing part.

clean interface, very useful piano roll feature with easy to use editing functions. I would happily pay for this program - if it were crash free.
Cons
as of version 2.1.7.8 there are bugs that crash the program in unpredictable ways. Prompts appear that a dll can't be found or that there has been an exception of one kind or another. Sometimes the program will run fine for a few minutes at a time but crashing is too frequent to make it usable. I have posted my crash diary at the developer's site and hope for fixes. When it runs trouble free I will certainly send in a contribution.
