"Great App!"
Version: Melody Assistant 7.4.7c
Summary

Let me preface this by saying two things: 1) I've only been using Melody Assistant for about 1/2 a day 2) I am not a professional composer/musician.
That said, I was looking for an inexpensive music notation software to digitize a 4-instrument song I'd composed in high school (almost 15 years ago!) that had been perfomed twice, but never recorded. I had my original "score," but like I said, I'm not a professional composer, so while I knew how the song was supposed to sound in my head, I didn't have any offical true sheet music that someone else could read/perform. I needed a program that could play back my original notes and that I could adjust to get it correctly notated.
Now, I'm pretty good with learning new software, and had a decent time figuring out the basics of this fairly intuitive software. After testing the shareware a few hours and doing a quick check to see that it was my best (and cheapest) option, I bought the license ($25 USD). Since then, I've downloaded and watched several of the numerous tutorials (accessible within Melody Assistant's Help menu), all of which were very easy to follow (I usually didn't even need to watch the whole video; just needed to be pointed in the right direction as to which options were hidden in which menus.)
It seems to me that this is a very complete music notation software and a steal at the price. My only complaint so far is that I haven't yet figured out a way to have the computer/app play my music complete with repeated measures, but I guess I could just remove the repeat signs and duplicate the repeated measures so it plays linearly. Also, I've figured out how to number the measures, but have yet to figure out how to number/letter different musical sections (intro, 1st movement, 2nd movement, bridge, etc.).
Thank you to the developers for this great, inexpensive application! -
"A savior"
Version: Melody Assistant 7.5
Summary

A mature, full-featured app for a fraction of the price of its competitors. I only wish there was a Melody Assistant for movie editing and all the other realms in which over-priced monster apps reign.
The sole negative I have is that there's a steep learning curve, but the same's true for Finale, etc. Computers just aren't set up for notating music in an intuitive way.
Anyway, I've used Melody Assistant for many, many years (recently updated to Harmony Assistant), and am incredibly grateful for it. -
"Major rendering flaws render this product useless"
Version: Melody Assistant 7.3.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The product produces unreadable renderings (both on screen and in print) in very basic situations (e.g. dotted half followed by 16th with alterations in 4/4). The notes and the accidentals end up on top of each other and there is no way to manually fix the placement. This is with the paying version, and the only answer from support is that this is on purpose, and that you have to go and purchase the more expensive Harmony Assistant product to be able to freely place the notes in the bar. I would strongly recommend against that product unless you are looking for endless headaches to create the most basic scores. -

Very good for music notation. Nice and easy to use.
I bought a copy six years ago and my licence is still valid. Not bad! -
"Good for what it is"

For the price it's the best thing I could find to do quick edits to midi ringtones, but the interface is pathetic. -
"Still the best"
Version: Melody Assistant 6.3.5c
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
At this price, it's unbeatable. The UI is very clunky and un-Apple like (think Sibelius next time, please). Also, the developers should post WHAT'S NEW on VT for each individual apps/OS, instead of sending the customers to their website where bug fixes/new features from all applications and all OS's are mixed together in an incomprehensible mess.
Still, if you're a composer and can't afford the high end solutions, this program is HIGHLY recommended.
