The Media Player Codec Pack is a simple to install package of codecs/filters/splitters used for playing back music and movie files. After installation you will be able to play 99.9% of files through your media player, along with XCD's, VCD's, SVCD's and DVD's. Also included in the package are a number of encoder codec's, allowing you to encode files in formats such as DivX. XviD, x264 and many more in your favourite encoding application. Compression types supported include DivX, XviD, x264, h.264 and many more in AVI, MKV, OGM, MP4 files. Video file types supported include 3GPP, AVI, MKV, OGM, MP4, MPG, MPEG, VOB, DAT, FLV, PS, TS, NUV. Audio file types supported include AC3, DTS, AAC, APE, FLAC, TTA, WV, OGG, Vorbis, MO3, IT, XM, S3M, MTM, MOD, UMX. Please Note: Formats such as iTunes, RealMedia and some heavily protected DVD's may require a specific player.

Program tries to sneak in items conveneintly not mentioned, changes your default search engine. Noticed an immediate degradation in computer performance.

I noticed an immediate degradation in performance on my previously smooth running computer.Used un-install toolbar option and rebooted but computer still runs sluggishly.Avoid this! CNET should be ashamed for allowing it to be published here.

VLC player already plays everything, I just wanted things to open in WM player. It does do that pretty well.
Cons
It sneaks things in. It gave an option not to install yahoo toolbar but then some "Dealio" toolbar installed itself. I strongly distrust and hate programs that do that because what else might they have done without me knowing.
Summary
If you only want to use windows media player this might help. There's still a few files that would not open and defaulted to other players so it's not a complete fix anyway. I say just get VLC media player which plays just about anything. I wouldn't suggest this software because it's sneaky
This Is Malware. Watch. You will get the Dealio Toolbar. That's not all. Type in a gibberish site that does not exist. You will be taken to urlseek20.vm (i think vm). anyway this is malware and it's sitting in your program files under search settings. Kaspersky went right by it and sees no issue but it's bad. I read it's tricky to delete and I'm not sure what else may exist I have not encountered but NO Way this has been tested to be spyware free. This should be removed asap

It works. I?m able to play DVDs compressed in MP-2 PAL format for region 2 (Europe). Until I tried it, I have considered this software a gamble, but it does work ? for me anyhow.

As for CONS, I'll have to find out...

On one of my up to date XP-Pro PC's Windows media player would NOT PLAY .MPG OR .MPEG files which played fine before the codec pack 3.4 was installed
Summary
When Windows media palyer 9 failed to play the .mpg files, I reinstalled it..no help. Then I uninstalled Media Player Codec Pack 3.4 and it would again play .mpg & .mpeg files.
These were non-protected 2005 vintage files with no bells & whistles. -
