CNET Editors' review
Media players are a dime a dozen, which makes it hard for them to stand out from the crowd. Media Player Classic Home Cinema is another contender in the category, but its glitchy performance failed to impress us enough to make the switch from our current player.
The program's user interface is as basic as it gets, which isn't a bad thing. A menu runs across the top of the window, offering navigational options: File, View, Play, Navigate, Favorites, and Help. A bar with buttons for playing, pausing, stopping, and skipping forward and backward resides at the bottom of the window. We started by inserting a DVD. Since it wasn't our default player, we had to find and open it in the player. The DVD started playing without any issues, but when we clicked the Stop button and then the Play button to resume, rather than start where it left off, the DVD started from the beginning. We tried it again several times only to have the same outcome. Help is available through a link that takes you to the Support page on the program's Web site. From there, a link takes you to a Web site to obtain documentation in various languages, but the idea of downloading a file from an unknown site doesn't exactly spell "security."
Media Player Classic Home Cinema installs and uninstalls cleanly. Overall, there were just too many issues with the program to warrant a recommendation from us.
Publisher's Description
From Media Player Classic - Homecinema:
Media Player Classic Home Cinema is a light-weight media player for Windows. It looks just like Windows Media Player v6.4, but has many additional features. You can use the player as a Media Player Classic Home Theater.
It has built-in codecs for MPEG-2 video and codecs for LPCM, MP2, AC3 and DTS audio, and also contains an improved MPEG splitter that supports playback of VCDs and SVCDs using its VCD, SVCD, or XCD Reader. An AAC decoding filter makes MPC suitable for AAC playback in MP4.
What's new in this version: Version 1.6.1.4235 supports for SIPR and VP30/31.

"Works great if intalled as part of K-lite codec pack."
Version: Media Player Classic Home Cinema 1.6.1.4235
Pros
No flashy skins, no confusing interface (classic menu bar with all options you want including adding favorites,) and plays about anything you want. Doesn't hijack your system like some players.
Cons
If installed independantly be sure to install all options and update your system to MPCHC's recommended software. Also some peoples systems apparently block this software. It's NOT MPC's fault.
Summary
Been using this for years, since it was the even simpler MPC (not home cinema)Currently using 1.5.3.3611 portable with no need to update. Works great on my XP and Windows 2000 systems. No need to have Windows 7!!
