At one time this freeware security suite was ubiquitous, but this edition isn't for the faint of heart.

McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008's interface strives to be novice-friendly, with cute green check marks and red crosses. Unfortunately, while the interface is novice-friendly, the program is not. Some advanced configurations are available only after drilling down two or three menus. During installation, McAfee asks for user input on an important settings question, but the small dialog box doesn't offer enough information to fully explain the ramifications of the settings.

Attempting to cover every security function, this suite handles more than viruses by adding a firewall, hard drive cleaner, disk defragmenter, and network security manager. By including everything and the kitchen sink, McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 feels bloated and it used more memory than we would have liked. Help is convoluted, and there's a chasm between the novice and expert user. We simply found McAfee too complex for novice users and not as advanced-user-friendly as similar suites.

    Version: McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008

    "Good..."

    by john_17 on July 1, 2008

Pros: Everything...it works smoothly with my computer at home...you wouldn't know if there is a virus until it tell's you...realy blocks malware...easy to use interface. I would consider getting Mcafee Internet Security Suite...

Cons: i don't like its firewall, i uninstalled the firewall and it used less system resources..other than that, none

"slow down your pc to a halt."

by sarah vaughan on May 20, 2008

    Pros: nothing

Cons: it really slowed down my pc and why would any one want to pay for this when you can get avast for free!. i had mcafee as part of my deal with my pc so i used it for a couple of months and it never found a thing so i gave avast a go and 1st full scan it found 2 trojans that mcafee had missed! get avast and back it up with bitdefender free as a scanner only to find anything that avast might miss and kiss goodbye to virus 4 ever. leave this garbadge alone.

    Version: McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008

    "Decent security package..."

    by acz81 on May 21, 2008

Pros: Mcafee VirusScan plus gives you antivirus, antispyware and firewall coverage for a fairly decent (39.99 USD) price which was perfect for me being an average pc user. McAfee VirusScan Plus's real-time protection is very swift at blocking viruses and took just under an hour to do a full scan. The antispyware mechanism didn't seem to pick up very much other than tracking cookies and a couple of more serious spywares. The firewall seems to work quite well and I did not experience any connectivity problems while it was on. McAfee's products are known for hogging system resources, but I can't actually say I noticed much of that moreso than any other antivirus program I've used before. I had it installed on my Dell Inspiron 6400 Vista pc...

Cons: The interface can be a little bit confusing at first and doesn't seem very "friendly." Can obviously bog down a somewhat older machine. McAfee's renewal policy is very stubborn and I had to basically argue with them on the phone to get my subscription cancelled. I know that's not specifically an issue with the product, but it's a good thing to know if you only plan on using their products for a limited time.

"McAffee VirusScan Plus; Endurable and User-Friendly"

by crowindirain on May 21, 2008

    Pros: Hi,

I would like to comment on my use of McAffe VirusScan Plus.

I began work in telecommunications in the mid-seventies. I worked multitudes of networks. I have experienced many attacks. During many of them the systems failed abysmally. I am a very active surfer privately. Plus recovered from all of the attacks. It performed better than any other software I have used. Thank you for granting me the opportunity to use it. I found it both user-friendly and very enduring, An asset to any system it is loaded onto.

Cons: This problem I present to you is less a problem with the Plus software and more of the shortcommings of the platform used. The machine I was using belonged to my brother and had only 256 mb of ram. So when updates were downloaded the machine functions slowed considerably.

Other than this< I experienced no problems with it and hardly noticed it's "mighty useful presence."
