Editor's review of McAfee VirusScan Plus

- "McAfee VirusScan Plus"
- Version reviewed: McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009
At one time this freeware security suite was ubiquitous, but this edition isn't for the faint of heart.
McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008's interface strives to be novice-friendly, with cute green check marks and red crosses. Unfortunately, while the interface is novice-friendly, the program is not. Some advanced configurations are available only after drilling down two or three menus. During installation, McAfee asks for user input on an important settings question, but the small dialog box doesn't offer enough information to fully explain the ramifications of the settings.
Attempting to cover every security function, this suite handles more than viruses by adding a firewall, hard drive cleaner, disk defragmenter, and network security manager. By including everything and the kitchen sink, McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 feels bloated and it used more memory than we would have liked. Help is convoluted, and there's a chasm between the novice and expert user. We simply found McAfee too complex for novice users and not as advanced-user-friendly as similar suites.

"McAffee should be called MCrappy!"
Pros: Pros? yeah.. i am yet to find anything i like about this program.
Cons: I am in the business of repairing computers, and have seen so many computers that have viruses McAfee either cannot remove, or does not recognize. This program also takes up too much memory, and is not user friendly at all.
Summary: My new computer came with this program, the first thing i did after setting up the computer was remove McAfee and install Avast Antivirus, i would reccommend anyone who is currently using McAfee to do the same!

Version: McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009
Pros: Easy to remove.
Cons: Does not stop viruses; breaks down frequently and fatally, so it must be reinstalled repeatedly; downloads from McAfee site often fail; technical support is non-existent; slows computer considerably; add-ons are obnoxious.
Summary: I made the mistake of actually buying this product, and after six months, it has failed in practically every way I could have imagined. I have had to reinstall it five times, because it encountered fatal errors and would no longer work. It allowe... read more >>

Version: McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009
Pros: Non intrusive, fast scans, excellent detection rates 99.1%(avcomparatives Feb 2009 test results )Mcafee has the lowest false positives of any AV and was awarded 4 star +. Incidentally Avast scored 98.2% Norton 98.7%AVG 93% Nod 32 97.6% .
Cons: None, no problems encountered
Summary: Ditched Avira for Mcafee as Avira reported has the highest false positive detection of any AV,if anyone does not know what a false positive is ,it is when an AV program reports quarantines a perfect legit "safe " file as a virus.

"There are much better ones out there"
Pros: I have been using Mcafee for about six months after I bought a new laptop. It seems like it was working good, it gave me no problems and just ran in the background with no fuss. Well turns out the damn Mcafee let TWO VIRUS'S slip into my system!
Cons: Poor virus detection, I paid $800 for my laptop and not gonna let this crappy software let virus's coming through.
Summary: Luckly I did go download a different Antivirus to see what the problem was, and yep two virus's detected by Avira AntiVir. I will be getting rid of Mcafee, I paid $800 for my laptop and not gonna let this crappy software let virus's coming through t... read more >>
