McAfee Labs Stinger is a quick, portable virus scanner, but it lacks the features you'd find in more dynamic virus suites. If you need active protection as you download files and other things you'd expect from programs like Avira or avast!, this isn't the program you want. However, if you're comfortable just finding problems after they've infected you, this program will dig deeper than some virus-scanning apps.
Though this is anti-virus software, it's not in the same class as Windows Defender or other programs, because it doesn't offer active protection, i.e., warnings as you download something. Instead, think of this program like MalwareBytes. This program offers a much less complex menu than its brethren usually offer; it only gives you a single button to start the scan. You can watch the scan as it goes, but we recommend you do something else with your time, since the scan took us more than 20 minutes to complete. It did find some stuff on our computer that we didn't even know existed, though. Once we finished the very long scan, McAfee Labs Stinger made quick work of the problems, quarantining them in no time.
Though you probably don't want to be without more active virus protection, this program can work in a pinch. It's tough to say if it's as useful as more advanced deep cleaners, but its one-touch interface will be a delight for people who aren't comfortable with more advanced options. If you count yourself in that group, give McAfee Labs Stinger a whirl.
McAfee Labs Stinger (64-Bit) is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.
