McAfee's antispyware product appears to be improving slowly, though it's still not a top-tier solution. The program's small, nonresizable interface shouldn't confuse most folks, although the links to the scanning tool and other settings could be more prominent. McAfee AntiSpyware is configured to run a thorough scan by default, but you can always customize it to save time. Scan times were relatively quick, and although the utility caught most major threats, it left behind numerous malware traces, including Registry keys. In our latest round of tests, the program's real-time shield proved much more effective than in the past, a big plus in our book. McAfee AntiSpyware includes a full-blown scheduler and can automatically update its definitions, but we did wish for a tool for controlling which applications launch on system start-up. You could certainly do a lot worse than this program, but some of its well-known competitors are a bit more reliable.
