"Functional solution for bulk e-mailing"
Version: Mailings 2.0.05
Pros
Does what you want it to do. Can send customized text or html emails. Can import lists and spreadsheets with custom import fields. Frequently updated.
Cons
Not intuitive interface for customizing emails. (almost like coding to customize). Non responsive customer support.
Summary
I've been using Mailings for quite some time to do some simple tasks sending out different types of emails to different types of lists. It works really well, never a hiccup...I'm always impressed with how frequently updates come to this piece of software (sometimes more than one a week!). Well done creating a super useful utility that's always up to date and relevant.
I recently (this week) used it for the first time using the custom import template tags feature to create a customized email to a group of people. I had previously been using the app EmailMerge for this task...I decided to try Mailings to do this because EmailMerge is no longer in development...and it's a "Classic" app that won't be supported under Lion (which I heard is eliminating the layer which supports Classic/PowerPC apps...so I'm trying to ween myself from the few apps I still use which fall into that category. Mailings is Universal and I already own it so i thought I'd give it a go.
I was successful using Mailings for the Merge I attempted, but I didn't find it as intuitive or as versatile for that particular feature as I would have liked. There's a few features/abilities that E-mail Merge has that I'd love to see in a future version of Mailings:
1) Custom Template Tags visible and manageable/editable in the "Select Recipients" window after import - In EmailMerge once I've imported from a spreadsheet I can see all the custom fields that I've imported...I can edit them all...search them etc. When I import in Mailings I only see the standard fields and I have no way of verifying that everything is in there.
2) Ability to preview merged emails. - The preview command is nice when I'm not using an email merge...but when I am I want to be able to see that it's merged correctly...in EmailMerge there is a feature that allows you to view on screen each merged email before it's sent.
3) Better way to insert Custom Template Tags - In E-mail Merge, once I have imported the CSV file, my custom template tags automatically appear in a menu that I can choose from to insert into the message. This seems to me to be a better way, less prone to error, and less like doing actual coding then inserting the tag code through the single "Custom Import Tag" from the pull down menu in the editor and then manually retyping the name of the custom tag. -
"A nice idea, but I often have problems with the program"
Version: Mailings 2.0.03
Pros
The program combines useful functionality with comparative ease of use. Added functions such as import of server settings has added value.
Cons
The program often hangs or crashes. I constantly juggle server settings to avoid having email addresses excluded.
Summary
I would like more reliability and user-friendliness.

"Works for me - getting better"
Version: Mailings 1.9.68
Pros
Interface is "busy" with features and options. I struggled to get it set up at first. Once I was over that hill, Mailings became quick/easy to use. Every day or two I send html pages to a group of 200 that I facilitate. It performs as advertised.
Cons
Interface could be streamlined. Documentation is adequate, needs improvement. Newbies under deadline: don't use. "Enter Mail Server Information" should be a top heading of "Setup", not the 7th item under "Creating Mailings."
Summary
Take your time learning to use this product and you'll like it. Price/Value it is a good buy. Oh, one other thing. This product previously deserved a poor rating. There was a lapse in its support and development particularly around the time Snow Leopard was being introduced. I cursed many times the way the interface scrambled my screen up. It behaved poorly for awhile. But I didn't give up and the updates seemed to have fixed most problems. The bottom-line is: disregard reviews that are more than 6 months old, unless the reviewer tells you specifically why Mailings doesn't perform as advertised. And to the applications author - thanks for picking up the pace of keeping Mailings current.

"problems sending attachments"
Version: Mailings 1.9.65
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Been a registered happy user for several years. Current version 1.9.66 though is busted and will not send attachments (small PDFs). Luckily I had a backup copy of 1.9.52 and that is working properly.
Please fix this bug and I can bump up my rating back to where it should be. -

"Great Product"
Version: Mailings 1.9.27
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've just tried it for a few days with my customer newsletter, and I'm very impressed by the ease of use and intuitive interface. One customer mentioned a garbled subject line, but that may have been a problem on his end of things. So far it seems great. And the price is great as well. -
"Wonderful Mac program ... great customer service..."
Version: Mailings 1.9.26
Summary
...... buy it!
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using Mailings for about a year to send monthly mailings to clients in my consulting business, and have generally found the program to be exactly what I'd been looking for. Mailings is easy to figure out, makes sending mass HTML emails to Mac OS Address Book groups a snap, and is a pleasure to use. I've not explored all the features, as there are many more than I need for my simple purposes.
Although one reviewer expressed dissatisfaction with the level of customer service he'd received from the developer after purchasing Mailings, I've had nothing but wonderful experiences corresponding with Joe Pagliaro, the developer of Mailings. Every time I've sent him a question about the program, he's responded quickly, capably, courteously, and professionally. I wish all business owners had the same high regard for their customers that Joe has.
In my opinion, Mailings is a truly wonderful shareware program reflecting the proudest of Mac software traditions. It's well priced, easy to use, with a simple interface, powerful functionality, and excellent developer support. Basically ... it just works! With a few very minor tweaks it would be perfect. Looking forward to version 2! -
"Reliable, configurable AND easy to use!"
Version: Mailings 1.9.26
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I initially tried Serial Mail, but that's not a reliable solution for sending thousands of formatted messages - let alone how professionally will the messages look in the end (part of formatting lost, only plain addresses in the "To:" field).
Mailings gave me all the features I needed. It includes recipient name in the "To:" field, integrates nicely with Address Book, supports both HTML and plain text alternatives (and has many more options I haven't used but they may come handy later). And it has worked very reliably. I got it setup in less than a hour (including the purchase). -
"just what I need"
Version: Mailings 1.8.7
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I really like this program. I use it to send email updates to my church supporters. It's a nice way to personalize the messages instead of using BCC. Only improvement I'd like to see is the ability to use html for the "preamble" even if the rest of the email/attachment isn't html, or basically just to be able to send an html message with nothing else attached directly from mailings. but I think the program is great and the developer is extremely responsive and helpful, even after numerous "dumb" questions.
