MagicISO's MagicDisc Virtual CD/DVD-ROM is a free tool that lets you create and use virtual CD and DVD discs that play just like the real thing, only you don't need to open and close the disc tray. You can create up to 15 virtual discs, which you can configure like any real disc: audio CD, DVD, game disc, or rewritable disc. You can create audio programs, save them as ISO images, and play them like an audio CD without having to burn them to disc. The tool offers versatile compression, encryption, and mounting options, too. It supports a huge range of optical disc formats, including some we hadn't seen before. MagicDisc is freeware that also integrates with the developer's premium MagicISO tool for more capabilities.

As part of the setup process, MagicDisc installs a virtual DVD-ROM driver. In addition to its tray icon, MagicDisc uses a series of pop-ups and dialogs for features and options. At various points, MagicDisc offers succinct explanations of choices and features; for instance, "Why use UIF instead of ISO and ZIP?" But it also offers a full browser-based manual as well as a long list of tutorials and support options. Virtual discs created with MagicDisc appear as regular optical drives in Explorer.

Creating and mounting disc images is easy with MagicDisc's wizardlike process. We started by creating an ISO image of an audio CD. A compact dialog let us choose our DVD-RW drive or one of MagicDisc's virtual discs. We named our file and chose an output directory, and then chose the output format from a drop-down menu offering Universal Image Format (the default choice) as well as ISO, BIN/CUE, and NRG disc formats. Clicking OK started the process, which finished quickly. Then we right-clicked one of our virtual drives, clicked Mount, and selected our new UIF file. Seconds later, Windows showed an audio CD containing identical content to our original that played normally. MagicDisc let us edit, unmount, or burn our disc image to a real disc.

With 200X searching speed and no device noise, MagicDisc not only expands your optical disc capabilities but also improves them.

"Does NOT work with Windows 8.1"

    August 27, 2014

    Version: MagicDisc 2.7.106

    Pros

Works great for Windows XP thru Windows 7

    Cons

    Doesn't work with Windows 8

    Summary

I've used this free little utility for over a decade and it's worked great. It's simple, intuitive, and worked flawlessly. However Windows 8 & 8.1 no longer support it. Windows 8 supposedly supports virtual drives natively, and it does. Sort of. But it's cumbersome & clunky and doesn't function in the same simple way that MagicDisc does. For Windows 8 users who want something like MagicDisc I recommend DAEMON Tools Lite. Works just like MagicDisc & is Win 8.1 compatible (and free!)

    "Win8.1 Problem"

    May 23, 2014   |   By jesjaspers

    Version: MagicDisc 2.7.106

    Pros

    nothing to say

    Cons

    install fails win8.1

    Summary

The software doesn't install on Win 8.1. Error message says it cannot open driver mcdbus, advises it be run as administrator, but still fails to install when that is done.
I've used this software for years on XP and now having moved to 8.1 am very disappointed

    "Comes with malware, avoid"

    November 14, 2013   |   By amd098

    Version: MagicDisc 2.7.106

    Pros

    Great disc mounting program!

    Cons

Bundled with malware. Older versions allowed you to uncheck them, but now you get a forced install of Connect Toolbar, which gives you even more malware "Yo dawg we heard you like malware so we put malware in your malware".

    Summary

Was once a good program, but then now it's too malware ridden that I would suggest avoiding it. Sorry Magic Disc, used you for a while, but now, it's over.

    "Start with a Deceptive Installation"

    June 24, 2013   |   By ThorsHammer

    Version: MagicDisc 2.7.106

    Pros

I can think of none, since there are other programs that do the same thing better without attempting to trick you into installing garbageware.

    Cons

The start of the installation process raised an instant Red Flag. Though technically the additional programs(crap ware) were of the opt-out variety the way they are presented appears designed to not give you that option. The un-select boxes are exceptionally small and tend to blend in.

    Summary

If you decide to even glimpse an install of this program I suggest you have a 3rd party uninstaller readily available such as Revo.

There are other programs that do similiar things without the addition of trying to trick you into installing a bunch of programs you don't want. Avoid this.

"Dumps bunches of crap-apps on your system"

    May 26, 2013   |   By bhuett

    Version: MagicDisc 2.7.106

    Pros

Magic Disk itself is a simple enough and useful app for mounting .iso files.

    Cons

This is a VERY BIG Con. The install process installs a raft of unasked for and unwanted apps on you system. It also usurps your home page on your browser pointing to some garbage site that tries to draw you in to installing yet more crap. There seems to be now way to prevent these from being installed.

    Summary

    Find another app

    Version: MagicDisc 2.7.106

    Pros

    Small download,works ok,free

    Cons

This program does not want to uninstall in add or remove it gives an error. This program places itself on startup without asking. There are virtually no options to speak of.

    Summary

I can forgive it placeing itself on startup, butt I could never forgive ANY software for refuseing to uninstall. Thus the low rateing.Lucky for me REVO UNINSTALLER got this malware out.
    Five stars for REVO!!!

"I use this all the time."

    March 11, 2013   |   By tylerdurden123paperst

    Version: MagicDisc 2.7.106

    Pros

Not sure why this software is only getting an average of 3 star ratings. Maybe other people don't know how to use it?? Or maybe I'm missing something... but this is must-have software if you want to mount images (iso's) to install whatever software or game you like. I install Magic Disk on all of my PC's right after I install Open Office (the free word-writing program that is sooooo underrated by those who choose to actually pay money for the exact same software called Microsoft Word.) Hint. Hint. I have a real problem with these companies making money off of people without informing us that we can get the same exact software FOR FREE from somewhere else and it is TOTALLY LEGAL. Hopefully soon in our future everything will be OPEN SOURCE so that we can push the evolution of technology to the next level. Have a wonderful day.

    Cons

Sometimes this software does not UNMOUNT properly when you click it. No big deal you just have to MOUNT another program in its place or use the UNMOUNT ALL DRIVES button... thus the reason for 4.5 stars instead of 5.
