Backing up your computer shouldn't be a tedious task. Macrium Reflect Free Edition makes file backup incredibly easy thanks to its intuitive user interface and helpful wizards.

Installing the program did confuse us a bit, because although it's a free program, it refers to purchasing the program, and you're given a confirmation number. On top of that, the program recommends that you view the online tutorials before getting started, but you might have some trouble deciphering them unless you speak Italian. Luckily, the built-in Help menu is more than adequate and written in English. The user interface is simple but professional in appearance. Intuitive commands line the top of the window, and tabs reveal options for disk images, partitions, XML definitions, and scheduled backups. A helpful wizard guides you through the process of setting up your backup. We were able to quickly select our backup location (local hard disk, network, CD/DVD). Before proceeding, it provides you with a summary of your backup so that you can see the backup type, destination, compression type, and password protection. Here is also where you can make advanced configurations to the compression levels and file sizes.

The program did slow our computer while it worked its magic, and we were unable to browse or work with other resource-intensive programs at the same time. However, we were able to watch the backup process, and the program successfully backed up our C Drive without a hitch. If you're looking for a simple but reliable backup program, we highly recommend Macrium Reflect Free Edition to all users.

"How can this be free?!"

June 11, 2010  |  By hoapersonal

 |  Version: Macrium Reflect Free 4.2 build 2525

Pros

Understandable user interface for noobs like me.
Super fast & reliable.
Free.
Did I mention that it's FREE?!

Cons

Wish I would have known about this program earlier so I could have ditched Norton Ghost a long time ago.

Summary

After years of frustration with Norton Ghost I finally discovered this gem. Layman's terms throughout the whole UI make this program one I not only need but also LOVE to use. Does what it needs to, nothing more, nothing less. Easy to backup image to, and restore image from, an external hard drive. No discs needed except for boot CD of course; which the program helps you easily create. Must upgrade to paid version for scheduled backups, but I never have my external HD connected to my laptop often enough to take advantage a feature like that. All test restorations of backup images I conducted went smoothly and reliably. Backed up my PC in about 30 minutes. Well done, Macrium.

Updated on Jun 12, 2010

I spoke too soon. I downloaded it again after upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit and it has lost the ability to restore from an external HD because the linux boot CD doesn't recognize the drive. Research on the Macrium forum indicated that the paid version is required to use to this. What a tease.

"Backups are ok, restoring is another problem"

June 10, 2010  |  By wizoomer95

 |  Version: Macrium Reflect Free 4.2 build 2525

Pros

I used this to back up my entire hard drive, it ran smoothly with no glitches.

Cons

Even if you purchase the upgrade, the disc IMAGE backup can only restore select files if you browse. If it spans more than one disc, you must put all the image files in one directory. Since one DVD is damaged, I can't access any of my files!

Summary

Unless you do the file backup (it may not be supported in this free version, idk), I strongly discourage the use of this product to backup things before reinstalling Windows or an OEM System Recovery. You MUST Backup your entire hard drive, and if you don't want to restore everything, make sure you make enough room on your hard drive or external drive to make sure you can browse them. And finally and most importantly: Keep all your backup discs safe so you can browse them.

"So far, so good."

June 03, 2010  |  By MikeBrumberg

 |  Version: Macrium Reflect Free 4.2 build 2525

Pros

I was able to figure out how to use it.

Cons

Seemed to use too many disks. Required 2+ DVDs to backup up 17M from my laptop. I haven't had time yet to try to restore anything or see if I didn't specify the right compression.

Summary

Sorry. Just tried it once to back up my laptop to DVD. Took 3 disks and 33 minutes.

"Good program, but needs updating!!"

May 22, 2010  |  By tryn2save

 |  Version: Macrium Reflect Free 4.2 build 2525

Pros

Backed up my partition nice & easily

Cons

Wouldn't boot my rescue disk, therefore in a crisis, I wouldn't be able to restore from my back up.

Summary

I was able to back up the partition of my choice easily enough. But then there was the rescue disk which on creating the disk only offered 2 options one of which would not work, & the other once booted uses a linux environment to proceed in restoring.
So without a choice I selected this option but after burning the disk it would not boot.
I found an option to use compatibility mode to make it work, however still no joy.
So end result I could back up the computer alright, but in a situation of need, will not be able to restore the system. So Macrium, maybe you should consider making this more compatible for the greater population of people who use WINDOWS as their operating system, instead of just the TINY population who sill (I don't know how many years later since it was created) still use linux as the just about only compatible operating system to make it work on. I mean really guys WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!!!!!!!!!

Cons

I haven't run into any problems yet.

"Well Designed and Implemented Utility"

May 16, 2010  |  By mikeband

 |  Version: Macrium Reflect Free 4.2 build 2525

Pros

Versatile: Allows backups of partition images and/or complete drive images (even images with multiple partitions). The boot disk utility takes you to a Linux 2.6 prompt that gives you the freedom to access networks, utilities and restore processes.

Cons

The free version provides only the basic features needed for scheduling image backups and restoration. Buy the full featured version for individual file backups, incremental and differential backups to images.

Summary

Image backups with Macrium are fast (60G in <40 minutes with a 5400 RPM drive) but it can also be slowed with a slider to allow mips for other simultaneous operations. Works flawlessy. Easy to use. Well documented.

NTI Backup Now EZ came with my new drive. I was soon convinced it was buggier than Florida. Macrium was sheer perfection in comparison - a very pleasant experience. I'm a fan and will be buying their full featured version in the future.
