The author really should consider charging for this, or at least make it donationware. Set up an account at PayPal or Kagi Branden, and I'll pay! the ability to not only add several accounts, but also to choose which folders to look into (or ignore) is great! It works with or without SSL, and gives me the choice of alert sound. I can only think of one small addition that I'd like, and that is to be able to get rid of the text in the menu bar. A simple icon with a number on it to show the number of unread mail would be nice. Not necessary though, but nice.

First five star freeware I've encountered in years!

This is a near perfect program for me - the 1.1 update added in the customizable alert sound (and then some). Great work!

Add in the ability to choose your alert sound and it'll get that fifth star.

      "Needs better configuration"

      February 29, 2004   |   By nightwol

      Version: MacBiff 1.0.4

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
A neat idea. Connects to, and checks, my IMAP server just fine over SSL. Trouble is it says I have 27 unread messages out of 29 when in fact I have 3/5. The reason? It counts every file in my home directory and all sub-directories thereof (.files included!) as containing 1 unread message. Maybe it's not ideal that my IMAP server delivers E-mail to my home directory but that's what it does and I have no control over that. So, until I can tell MacBiff which files really are mail files, it won't be usefult to me. A pity.

      "Works fine now"

      Summary

This version fixes the problems I had before with my IMAP server. Still a couple of minor interface infelicities, but generally a useful app if you keep other icons that might show current mail (e.g., Mail.app) hidden.

      "Use Menumail"

Take a look at Menumail. It lets you add as many accounts as you want. This one only lets you create one account to check. I couldn't get macbiff to work for some reason. I would either get invalid argument or unknown error. What Menumail doesn't have that this does is support for SSL. I can't attest to how well it works though as it still hasn't successfully connected to my mail server.
